Every week, we will discover a new island and all that makes that island, RICH!

We are jumping to another Caribbean Island, Barbados.

Barbados is the easternmost Caribbean Island. Barbados is less than a million years old; based on known history, the Island was created by the collision of the Atlantic crustal and the Caribbean plates, and the first set of settlers came around 1623.

The Island gained full independence in 1966. Barbados still maintains ties with the British. According to Barbado.org, the highest point of Barbados is Mount Hillaby, which is about 1,115 feet above sea level. Barbados also has the third oldest Parliament in the Commonwealth. So, as of November 30th, Barbados will elect the first-ever President Sandra Mason.

The Bajans (the people of Barbados) are happy, friendly people. Barbados produced Mount Gay rum that is distilled on the Island and has been in existence since 1703. The Bajans (the people of Barbados) dominated the Caribbean in the sugar industry in the early years. Barbados dominates the Caribbean in the sugar industry.

Barbados is also known as the land of the flying fish. The national dish of Barbados is Cou Cou and Flying Fish. The grapefruit originated in Barbados was known as the Forbidden Fruit.

Barbados is the home for the Green Monkey, which came from Senegal and the Gambia in West Africa 350 years ago. One of the country’s landmarks is The Crane Resort, which is the oldest resort in the Caribbean (founded in 1887).

There are many different things you can enjoy on this beautiful Island. Barbados is known for good surfing, often holding surfing competitions, between November to June. Barbados is known for its epic Caribbean Carnival celebration, Crop Over, which starts in June and ends the first Monday in August. You can enjoy Horse Racing in Garrison Savannah. While in Barbados, you must visit Canon Galore, the world’s rarest collection of the 17th century English iron cannon to date (over 400 have been unearthed). I wish I had my childhood photo album. I have a few pictures from here where my cousin and I sat and laid on the canons at nine years old. Oh, the sweet memories.
