An Attitude of Gratitude

Gratitude is a feeling of appreciation for what we already have. Being mindful that everything we have is because of GOD’S Grace and Goodness and acknowledging such with a heart of thanksgiving can only produce “An Attitude of Gratitude!” Even amid so much negativity, there is always something to be grateful for. As we are approaching the thanksgiving season and entering the month of November, let November be filled with thanksgiving and gratitude. One small word, GRATITUDE,” can profoundly affect our lives, especially when things seem to be working against us. 

As Oprah Winfrey stated in the quote above, gratitude will lead to more. The purpose of thanksgiving and gratitude is not to gain more but to thank GOD for the blessings that we already have. Gratitude is a choice, and we can choose to be thankful for the blessings we have in our lives. Gratitude is defined as the quality of being thankful and readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness!

Faith is the most powerful way to express gratitude. We should thank GOD when life appears to be turning on us and when we have done all we know to do. In the words of my pastor and grandfather, Dr. Oscar Nelson Dowdell-Underwood, “A thank you, Jesus” or “Thank you, LORD” can change the dynamics of life. Furthermore, research shows that gratitude improves our mental health or, in the words of the Bible, brings peace of mind knowing that everything will be fine. Thus, giving thanks to GOD in every situation (1 Thessalonians 5:18).  

So, for November, I challenge you to have an attitude of gratitude that is shaped by being grateful. Replace complaining with thanksgiving and negativity with positivity. Change how you view life and how you see the abundance of blessings you have in your life presently. Keep a Gratitude Journal, and note daily the things you are thankful for, whether it is a relationship, your health, your business, food, etc. Finally, make it a habit to “thank God” not to receive anything but to thank Him for what you already have and who GOD is. 

To help you embrace an attitude of gratitude, read and meditate on the following Bible verses: 

  •  1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV)

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

  • Colossians 3:15 (NIV)

“And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since to members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”

  • Psalm 107:1  (ESV)

“Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!”

  • Psalms 136:1 (NIV)

“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever.”
