Author Lid’ya C. Rivera Inspires Young Readers At Book Launch Party

Excitement filled the air as the much-anticipated book launch and party for HarperCollins author Lid’ya C. Rivera’s “I Absolutely, Positively Love My Spots” took place. With a heartfelt storyline centered around a little girl with vitiligo, this picture book is a celebration of self-acceptance and the beauty of diversity. Featuring stunning illustrations by the talented artist Nina Mata, the event aimed to inspire young readers to embrace their uniqueness and love the skin they’re in. 

On June 6, 2023, the Books-A-Million at The Avenues Viera came alive with the energy and wonder of Rivera’s book launch and party. Nestled in the heart of the city, Books-A-Million is known for its dedication to promoting diverse literature and fostering a love for reading in young minds. With its cozy and inviting atmosphere, Books-A-Million provides the perfect backdrop for this momentous occasion. This day was also historic because this was the first time a major publisher had published a children’s book about vitiligo. 

Rivera, a compassionate and talented author, has crafted a remarkable story that speaks to the hearts of both children and adults. Drawing inspiration from the experiences she wishes she had growing up, Rivera’s book showcases the journey of a little girl with vitiligo as she learns to embrace her unique beauty and love herself unconditionally. The Florida author’s words resonate deeply, weaving a narrative encouraging readers to celebrate their individuality and find strength in their differences.

Adding a touch of magic to “I Absolutely, Positively Love My Spots” are the captivating illustrations by Nina Mata, a renowned artist whose talent has been recognized with a Geisel Honor. Mata’s artistic style brings the story to life, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the vibrant world of the protagonist. Through Mata’s skillful brushstrokes, the illustrations beautifully capture the emotions and experiences of the young girl, ensuring an enchanting visual journey for readers.

The free, family-friendly event hosted an array of activities designed to engage and inspire children, fostering a sense of self-acceptance and unity. Rivera was at the forefront of the festivities, captivating the audience with a special reading of her book. As Rivera’s words flowed from her lips, children were transported into the world of the protagonist, experiencing her journey firsthand and gaining valuable insights into the importance of embracing one’s unique beauty. In the summer of 2022, RallyUp Magazine, a mental health magazine, featured Fancy as their cover story, where she opened up about receiving her diagnosis. The McComb, Mississippi native is part of Facebook’s independent journalism project, Bulletin, where she publishes The Higher South, and she was a member of the NABJ Entrepreneur Academy powered by CafeMedia in 2021. The Glambitous Guide to Self-Love, Peace, and Confidence contributor is an avid learner and creative. Currently, she is attending Southern University A&M College, completing her bachelor's degree and rearing her three young adults. Fancy enjoys learning more about spirituality, Black history, and feminism in her free time, along with yoga and walking.
