Curvy Iconic Fashion meets Modern-Day Looks: Eartha Kitt

“When I speak of “curves”, I am not only referring to the plus-size industry. I am speaking of every Black woman and the curves of their beautiful bodies, not defined by size or a specific shape.” – Sabrina Carrington

Eartha Kitt was such a magnificent talent – seen in movies and on stages, as an actress, singer, and dancer. Not only was she a rare and beautiful talent, but she was also a known activist. Her personality on and off the screen was undoubtedly courageous, outspoken, and a force to reckon with. She was a teacher and mentor for many; whether she personally touched their lives or if they admired her from afar. Eartha Kitt was definitely a top-notch performer and entertainer, also known for being a kind mother and role model.

She worked hard and lived life. She was strict when it came to her personal goals and her quality of life. She never forgot where she started and testified through her strong work ethic. She acted along with some of the greatest and worked hard to get there.

Her style has been the subject of the most popular fashion publications worldwide, even today. Celebrities have copied many of her looks – on the red carpet and even in their everyday lives. Suddenchic.com said this about the icon.

“She often took things to extremes, with full leopard-print outfits inclusive of gowns, coats and the matching animal by her side. She donned plenty of lush furs, sometimes just a shawl worn as a mini dress. She made tight leggings and bodysuits look cool and she never avoided a bright and boldly colored turban, nor an embellished sequin bodysuit. Designer Zac Posen famously named a handbag after the style icon Eartha Kitt, whom he often has cited as one of his biggest fashion inspirations.”

Eartha Kitt was so versatile with her style. She could literally go from wearing a pair of leggings and a turban with an oversized top, to dripping in sequins and crystal – effortlessly accentuating her dynamic curves. In my opinion, Eartha Kitt grew into her personal style, decade after decade. As she became older, her style became more confident, exotic, and colorful. Her general sense of style remained, but her self-growth and self-love became more and more evident as she blossomed.

We selected three of Eartha Kitt’s looks. The first look is a simple, sleeveless, white ribbed dress with a satin belt that she wore in the movie, “Anna Lucasta” with the late, great Sammy Davis, Jr. Perfectly paired with a long beaded necklace for a little “jazz”.

The second is the all-time favorite “Eartha” in a red sequin dress and matching headband. So many times, you would catch Eartha Kitt in a sequin dress. This became a signature look for the Icon.

The final look was the actual cover of one of Eartha Kitt’s albums, “Down to Eartha”; wearing green velvet pants, a cream silk blouse, and an orange belt for a must-have accent.
