Get prepared! Just in time for summer – Netflix has just announced its “Strong Black Summer” which includes must-watch films and series that are sure to appeal to every aspect of the Black experience.
The Strong Black Summer lineup begins on June 23 with The Perfect Find starring Gabrielle Union, Keith Powers, Gina Torres, and La La Anthony. This film is based on the novel by Tia Williams, written by Leigh Davenport, and directed by Numa Perrier this movie. After a setback and financial uncertainty, will Jenna (Gabrielle Union) risk it all for a secret romance that could destroy her comeback?

On July 13th, Survival of the Thickest will be premiering, starring Michelle Buteau, Tone Bell, Tasha Smith, Anissa Felix, and Garcelle Beauvais. Following Mavis, a Black, plus-size, and newly single who finds herself having to rebuild her life as a struggling stylist. Determined to not only survive but thrive with the support of her chosen family, a body-positive attitude, and a cute v-neck with some lip gloss, she does so with humor. The scripted comedy is based on Buteau’s acclaimed book of essays. The trailer for They Cloned Tyrone dropped recently, and it had everyone talking. This title will debut on July 21 and stars Jamie Foxx, John Boyega, Teyonah Parris, David Alan Grier, and Alphonse Nicholson. Written by Tony Rettenmaier and Juel Taylor, the story follows a series of eerie events surrounding an unlikely trio, John Boyega, Teyonah Parris, and David Alan Grier, that stumble onto nefarious government conspiracy in this pulpy mystery caper. Executive Produced by Jamie Foxx, Charles D. King, Stephen “Dr.” Love, Tony Rettenmaier, Juel Taylor, and produced by Mark R. Returning on August 17 is the Netflix hit The Upshaws starring Kim Fields, Mike Epps, and Wanda Sykes who is also a show creator along with Regina Y. Hicks. The show follows Bennie Upshaw, a mechanic played by Mike Epps; Regina, played by Kim Fields; their two young daughters played by Khali Spraggins and Journey Christine; and their firstborn son, played Jermelle Simon, also a teenage son played by Diamond Lyons who Benny fathered with Gabrielle Dennis. Bennie is a guy dealing with his sister-in-law and tolerating her unsolicited advice at times, played by Wanda Sykes. In this upcoming season, the Upshaws continue to ride life’s ups and downs, including new jobs, bigger dreams, health struggles, and also some major life surprises but still hang on with the love that comes with family.
