SwagHer Sits Down With St. Croix, Virgin Islands Hip Hop Artist Lima Roe

St. Croix (U.S. Virgin Islands) Rapper Lima Roe is making waves and burning up the charts with her single “Big Roe,” a song with more than 14K streams. She is bringing her unique style, work ethic and stage presence to the hip-hop culture by empowering other female artists and also introducing the world to all of the talents that St. Croix has the offer.

How does it feel to pursue your dreams?
Honestly, it is a blessing to pursue your dreams no matter what industry you work within. For me, I believe success continuously meets me because I give it my all! In order to have WINS, you must first become comfortable with the possibility of LOSING. I’ve lost a lot to get where I am, and I understand that it is a part of the climb. I’ve also gained a lot in the process too. I fall in love with my craft daily and it feels good to know that I inspire so many women to do the same.
What keeps you motivated and inspired?
I am inspired and motivated by my children, as well as becoming the first! To date, there has not been a mainstream artist to come out of my hometown, St. Croix, [U.S.] Virgin Islands. I find motivation in helping to put my home on the map. There are so many talented artists here, but I am grateful for the recognition I’ve received. I’ve never been the type of person to settle for mediocracy which is why I continually inspire myself. I don’t see any other indie female rap artists as competition! My goal is to outwork and outperform myself. Big Roe is here to stay!
What advice would you give to someone who is unsure about pursuing their dreams?
When you wake up every morning and create your day exactly how you dream it to be, that is a success! My advice to anyone who is unsure about pursuing their dreams would be to block out the noise, even if that means cutting off “friends” and “family.” You get one life to turn your dreams into reality, so it is important to protect your peace and a large part of that comes down to reevaluating the people you allow into your circle. Lastly, when you are pursuing your dreams, make sure that they are in alignment with your purpose and passion.
How do you want your music to be received? What impact are you looking to make?
When people hear my music, I want them to feel like a BOSS! That looks different for everyone individually but ultimately I want people to hear one of my tracks and feel good about themselves, especially women. Most of my songs are made for women but I desire to be admired and respected by men as well. When my fans hear anything I drop, they know that hard work went into the visuals and that keeps them coming back for more. Closing the gender gap and eliminating gender bias in hip hop is big for me. I should be able to talk that talk and speak my mind freely without hearing murmurs about how women should act or behave within the industry. I’m not just here to break glass ceilings, I’m here to shatter them!
How have your life experiences played a part in your journey?
I come from humble beginnings, growing up I was raised in a small three-bedroom, one-bathroom house with my mom, my four siblings, my aunt and her children as well as my grandparents. Needless to say, we believed in the power of a village and I am thankful for the lessons we learned along the way. Regardless of my upbringing, I come from a strong family with strong roots and influence here in St. Croix, Virgin Island. We didn’t have much growing up, but we had each other. That same love and support that allowed my family to build a legacy in my hometown is the same community that motivates me to make it!
What can we expect from you in the future?
In the future, you can expect to see me on a new level! I’m continuously challenging myself to try new things, expand my sound and build awareness around the talent that exists in the [U.S.] Virgin Islands. Although we are a U.S. territory, not many people know about my home or the talented artists that live here. You can also expect to hear more music, and with the support of my team, you’ll continue to see me share my story to stardom on notable platforms such as this one.
