Young, Detroit Author Talks Kids Being Kids & Her Books

Shelby Lea, hailing from the metro-Detroit region, is a young author who discovered her passion for writing through her interactions with her father, a fantasy author, S. L. Jackson.  This interest led her to express her desire to create stories based on her own life. This vision materialized as “The Adventures of Shelby Sunshine,” a book series aimed at sharing her childhood experiences with kids of her generation. Since 2021, Shelby has successfully introduced three books in this series, capturing the hearts of her young readers.

In 2023, Shelby’s remarkable work earned her a nomination for the Moonbeam Awards in the category of best chapter book series for children. Beyond her literary endeavors, Shelby finds joy in family moments, engaging in sports, indulging in reading, and excelling in her studies. Adding another layer to her accomplishments, Shelby is preparing to launch a merchandise website, offering her supporters the opportunity to acquire items such as t-shirts and more. Enjoy my chat with Shelby below.

Fancy: We know that your dad is an author, but what was it in particular that attracted you to writing books?

Shelby Lea: I saw my dad (S.L Jackson) writing, and I wanted to write books also, I wanted to write about what was going on in my life. It was a way for us to spend time together. I tell him what I want to write about, and we work on it together, then my mom edits the books. It’s our family business.

Fancy: What was it like writing your first book of The Adventures of Shelby Sunshine series, and how many have you written so far?

Shelby Lea: It was exciting! The first book we wrote was “The Bestest Family Vacation”, about our family vacation that we took to Florida in 2020. The series has three parts right now, “Kindergarten For Reals” and “Next Stop, First Grade.”

Fancy: How do you decide which events from your life you will write about?

Shelby Lea: It just depends, Dad and I talk a lot, I tell him stories about things, then he’ll ask if that is what I want to write about. Once we pick a topic, we do an outline; then we create our books.

Fancy: Do you incorporate your real friends into your books?

Shelby Lea: YES!!! I talk about my real friends and family in our books. Mom, Dad, Harmony, Te-Te, Granny, Ava J, Yonnie, Lavell, and my dog Charlie, are all real people in my life. I mention my real friends also.

Fancy: What do you hope other children take away from your books?

Shelby Lea: I hope other kids read my books and they enjoy them. I’m just a kid having fun being a kid. My dad always tells me, “Don’t rush to be grown,” so I want other kids to know it’s cool to be a kid still.

Fancy: When can we expect your merchandise to drop?

Shelby Lea: I just launched my merch site. You can click here and visit my site. Right now, it’s clothing, t-shirts, etc; we plan on having other items in the future.

Fancy: Are there any projects or events you are working on now and would like to share?

Shelby Lea: Right now, our focus is my new merch site, and we want to make sure everyone is familiar with my book series, “The Adventures Of Shelby Sunshine.”

Fancy: Where can readers connect with you online?

Shelby Lea: You can connect with me online by ordering my book series and reaching out to my dad. I’d like to thank SwagHer Magazine for taking the time out to interview me.
