Rooted & Radical Youth Poetry Festival, formerly known as Louder Than a Bomb, provides a community-inspired platform for young poets to share their creative gifts. This festival focuses on empowerment, not competition, by creating a safe space for young writers to use their voices to celebrate each other’s talent. This yearly poetry festival is a program of Young Chicago Authors: a youth literary organization that has served thousands of young teens who are artistic, creative and unique storytellers since 1991.

As Women’s History Month is coming to a close, I wanted to  analyze the dynamic friendships of some of our cultures most trailblazing, Black female led sitcoms, Living Single, Girlfriends and Insecure. Though fictional, the characters were all so relatable, representing Black women with various personalities and lifestyles in an array of melanated  hues and body types—helping us feel seen on the screen that we don’t typically grace.

One thing that can’t be denied is Solange Knowles’ innate and superb sense of  individuality that is expressed through her artistry over the years. It’s what gave us 1960’s inspired tunes like “I Decided,” and sonically refreshing  bodies of work like “A Seat At the Table.” With that being said, it’s no surprise that the prestigious institute NYU has honored the innovator with there 2022 Trailblazer Award—just in time for Women’s History Month.
