Can you believe that we are approaching the year 2020? This world is rapidly changing, in every aspect of our existence. It’s important that we all have the ability to understand each other’s perspectives, whether we agree or disagree. That’s where effective communication comes in to play. Having “20/20 Wisdom†and a clear, effective communication style is more important nowadays than ever! Old communication styles must be revamped in order to be effective in the world we live in today. Personality styles go hand in hand with effective communication styles; they are like peanut butter and jelly, cake and ice cream, jazz and wine – from my perspective.
An effective communicator must understand personality types. The most effective communicator understands their own personality type and tailors their communication style to fit their personality. Knowing your own personality style helps balance your communication style with whatever personality type you might come in contact with on a daily basis. Personality types have always been categorized into four specific types. In my day, personality tools such as Meyers/Briggs were used to determine an individual’s personality type to help them understand HOW to communicate more effectively.
In everything I have learned, I know that there are four basic personality types. They have been called different things by different experts i.e., Controller/Melancholy = Analytic type; People Pleaser/Phlegmatic = Nurturer; (Extrovert and Meticulous round out the four types). Different personality types process and communicate information differently. Some process and communicate information logically (Analytic), and some process information in an emotional way (Nurturer).
Each personality type has its own strengths and weaknesses. Typically, we all possess a combination of all personality types, however, we do have a dominant personality type, which is what people will see first. It is easy to be an effective communicator. The first step is understanding personality types and how they function. You must know your OWN personality type to be able to effectively communicate with those different types. You can be successful in your communication by understanding that all personality types are different; however, it is up to you to adjust your personality style (remember, we ALL possess all four types) in order to establish effective communication.
We must learn how to communicate effectively with others and we must practice this daily to become an effective communicator – even if it becomes uncomfortable for us. It will become easier, as we grow in the process. Over time, it will become less difficult…just TRUST the PROCESS!. I leave you with this:
Getting Centered:To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others. Tony Robbins
