5 Ideal Times to Hire a Publicist

An important question that I am often asked is when is a good time to hire a publicist. It’s an important question because I’ve learned that individuals often think they are ready for a publicist but may not be. I think that my fellow PR colleague Maleeka Holloway gave a great response in an interview she did last year. I decided to share these ideal situations for hiring a publicist.

 

 5 Ideal Situations for Hiring a Publicists

 

When it’s time to tap into new audiences.  

If you have been in business for a while, you will find it imperative to tap into new audiences. With the assistance of a publicist, press placements, and other services, you can put yourself out there for others to discover.

 

When you have exciting news that interests others.

I often tell people that a good time to hire a publicist is when you have something going on. Meaning, are you: 

Launching a new product or service?

Relaunching?

Hosting an event?

Receiving an award or some type of recognition?

Partnering with another company on a project?

 

When trying to establish yourself as an authority. 

If you are trying to establish yourself as an authority within your industry, hiring a publicist is a good move as we help you think of ways to think outside the box, and now you have a team to help you achieve your vision. Also, if you are trying to get verified on social media, the press you secure with a publicist plays a big part in things. 

 

When you need a fresh perspective for sharing your brand story.

While a good story never gets old, sometimes, we must find a new angle to garner more attention. At some point, you will need to reinvent yourself a little, and I do not mean make up stuff, but rather find something else that interests your audience that they did not know about you or your brand. 

 

When revenue is no longer your biggest concern.

In the words of fellow publicist Talisha Bradley, “PR is a luxury.” It’s not cheap, so it is best to hire a publicist once you have stable revenue and a budget for the services and the activities that come along with them. By activities, I mean you may want to be a sponsor for an event, pay to be a part of an event, or travel somewhere, and sometimes these things cost. As publicists, we try to find you free, earned opportunities, but occasionally there are opportunities that are paid and too good to pass up.
