8 Ideas for National Random Acts of Kindness Day

February 17, 2023, and it’s National Random Acts of Kindness Day! According to, this unofficial national day was launched in New Zealand in 2004, when founder Josh de Jong came up with the idea while being stuck in traffic one day. After watching drivers display road rage, Josh wondered what it would be like if people in New Zealand got along for one day. This event made Random Acts of Kindness Day popular in New Zealand.

Today is not a day to boast about the great things you’re doing for people on social media. This day is to do something positive intentionally and from the heart. We’re taught from an early age that what we put into the universe is what we’ll get back; paying it forward is good for the soul.

The effect of a random act of kindness makes the giver and the receiver feel equally good. Need any ideas on how to celebrate National Random Acts of Kindness Day? Here is a list of my favorite ‘good deeds.’

Simple Ideas You Can Do Today

  • Pay for the coffee, groceries, or meal of the person in front of you in line.
  • Donate can goods to a local food pantry.
  • Compliment a stranger.
  • Donate dog or cat food to the animal shelter.
  • Leave snacks for your co-workers.
  • Run errands for an elderly neighbor.
  • Cuddle babies at a crisis nursery.
  • Surprise a neighbor by cleaning the snow off their car.
