Are Your Meds Making You Smell?

Are Your Meds Making You Smell? You, indeed, read that right. And it is a question that will require some serious thought…for some of us, at least. Have you ever heard folks say, “You are what you eat,” because the smell of what you ate is coming out through your sweat?  I sure have…it’s garlic for me!  And the remedy has always been to eliminate or reduce the food causing the smell.  The same is also true for some medical conditions.

According to Cleveland Clinic (March 2022), medical conditions like diabetes, gout, liver/kidney disease, and even menopause are associated with how your body will smell.  For diabetics, elevated ketone levels can cause your odor to become fruity.  Likewise, with liver or kidney disease, the smell may be like bleach if your body cannot flush toxins out.  And yes, the hormonal changes that come with menopause, which leads to excessive sweating that then leads to changes in odor, are real! It is not always the condition itself that causes the odor; it can also be a combination of your sweat and any bacteria on the surface of your skin that can be the culprit.

Along with medical conditions, there are some medications that can cause your chemistry to change and release an uninviting odor. When I first began medication for psoriasis, there was an adjustment my body had to make when it was first introduced. As my body got ‘used’ to the medication, I noticed I smelled different whenever I started to sweat. After roughly ten years of use, my skin was clear, and my joints felt better.  However, the odor remained.

There are treatments that can be prescribed to prevent sweating altogether. However, as a skincare maker, I knew there was a solution to control odor naturally.  And there is!  Research shows that certain essential oils are historically known for their odor-fighting capability.  Oils like lavender, lemongrass, peppermint, sage, or the most popular – tea tree, have amazing natural antibacterial properties.  Eucalyptus and parsley essential oils also neutralize odor.  How to use and blend them is more important than knowing what essential oils fight odor.  So, if natural remedies are what you prefer, be certain to work with a formulator that can create a product that will work with your body without causing harm.  Essential oils are powerful gifts, but they must be used properly.

So what is the secret to successfully getting my ‘smell good’ chemistry in check?  Irresistible Pussé! It contains several yoni-loving ingredients for great vaginal health, including odor.  Aloe vera is one ingredient that everyone is most familiar with.  Aloe vera contains amazing antifungal and antimicrobial properties. It is also a natural cleanser, making it an amazing ingredient for taking care of your intimate areas.

You always want to get the most bang for your buck with any product, and having skincare products that are multipurpose will do just that. In developing my personal solution, I formulated a feminine cleansing foam that takes care of your vaginal health and any other area of the body that may be odorous and need gentle cleansing.

Aloe vera cleansing bars are another great example of getting a dual purpose from one product.  Along with antibacterial abilities, it is also anti-inflammatory.  You already know if you’ve ever had sunburn. Yes, bring on the big bottle of aloe vera gel!  Aloe soothes, cools, and heals at the same time.

Finally, just a few tips to remember:

  • Pay attention when your body reacts to various conditions or medications.
  • Read the side effects of all your medicines. If a side effect is severe, talk to your doctor.
  • Do your research! There are medical treatments and natural treatments for body odor. Decide which is best for you.
  • Find a reputable formulator to create an essential oil-based product you and your skin will love.
  • Look for natural products that are multipurpose to save on products AND waste.
  • Always, always, always listen to your body.
