Sunday morning February 2nd sports fans were waiting and anticipating one of the biggest sporting events of the year. Courtesy of hard work and dedication, both the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers earned the right to play in the Super Bowl which was scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m. eastern time. While patiently waiting for the big clash, a different type of clash was trending on social media.
A video surfaced showing Lightweight champion Gervonta Davis participating in a heated argument with a young lady at a celebrity basketball game in Miami. The young lady was later identified to be Andretta Smothers, the mother of Davis’s daughter. The 14-second video shows Davis and Smothers in an intense verbal exchange. Davis proceeded to grab Smothers near the neck area and pulled her out of her chair. Then he forcefully escorted her to the back of the arena. In the video, you can also see a man dressed in all black to the left of Smothers casually move out of the way. Whether or not Andretta Smothers and the man in all black were at the game together is yet to be determined.
For the boxing champion Gervonta Davis, he made a bad situation worse when he made an attempt at damage control.
“I never once hit her. Yea I was aggressive and told her come on…that’s the mother of my child I would never hurt her,” Davis stated in an Instagram post.
This incident opens up a conversation about a delicate topic. Athletes and the relationships they have with the mother of their child is very complex. It becomes that way when they have a child together and the relationship between them fails. In this all too familiar scenario, the athlete is ordered to pay an insane amount of money for child support. The money is more than enough to take care of the child and finance a lavish lifestyle for the mother. After the mother takes care of the child’s necessities, she has funds left over for designer clothes, expensive jewelry, and high-end handbags. Due to the fact the athlete is affording the mother of his child a comfortable living, he feels entitled. The athlete feels he can have relations with the mother of his child whenever he wants and he feels he has the freedom to see other women. The problems ultimately start when the mother of an athlete’s child decides to see other men. This can trigger both rage and jealousy due to the fact the athlete may feel the baby mama is using his money to entertain another man. He may also oppose the baby mama having another man around his child. Not all but a good percentage of athletes have the mentality even if they’re not in a relationship with the mother of their child, she should still treat him as her top priority. Some of the mothers find this type of expectation degrading while others are fine with it as long as the check clears. In the case of this incident with Gervonta Davis, public opinion has already cast their vote, but Andretta Smothers hasn’t cast her vote.
People have been quick to rush to her defense, but the question remains does she want you to defend her? These situations are very sensitive because the public can come down on the guilty party while the actual victim may be willing to grant immediate forgiveness to the aggressor, and then display anger towards the public for criticizing the aggressor. It may not be the case in this situation but it has been known to happen. At the moment this incident has the Lightweight champion on the ropes. Hopefully, Davis will learn from this disappointing ordeal and counter the negative with a positive.
