We got to chat with the Co-Author of “Just Dance With Me” to discuss life as an author, and business owner, her advocacy for healthy marriages, and more.
Tammy: Please tell us about how your journey as an author came about.
Carita: I stepped into the world of becoming an author in 2016 with my very first published book, #SELFIE “Behind Every Smile is An Untold Story.” The inspiration behind this book came from my birthday celebration the year prior up in the Blue Ridge Mountains with several girlfriends. It was my first ever girls trip, if you will. I found out that no one is without issues, no relationship is perfect, looks are deceiving, and, well, you get the idea. I had been living in my own world with my children at the center with my own marital issues and had not come up for air in years. The trip gave me the courage to take the reins of my life back. Upon our return, I was sitting in my office at work, and as clear as day, I heard from God to write a book.
My passion for books came from my childhood. My mother, Betty J. Johnson was a pioneer in bringing library services to the black community of Sarasota, FL. In doing so, she did not forget about home. We had a mini library in our playroom full of every children’s book imaginable. I am proud to say that her passion paid off, and now there is a library named in her honor, and she is alive to see it. When in Sarasota, please go and visit the Betty J. Johnson North Sarasota Public Library.
Tammy: What would you like our readers to know about the book you co-authored with your beloved husband titled, “Just Dance With Me”?
Carita: “Just Dance With Me” is not just a book, it is a movement. We want to heal and restore marriages through the transparency we share about our own marriage. We want to make marriage popular again. In our 24+ years of marriage, we have come to understand that there is a rhythm and flow to longevity in a relationship. Marriage does not have to be miserable, marriage can be so much fun. We want couples to forgive each other and fight for their relationships.
This book is written from two points of view, mine and my husband’s about “the hot topics of marriage” We address submission, finances, disciplining kids, separation, when we met, gender roles, and more. Oh, we spill some tea too. It’s definitely a page-turner but all for the purpose of giving real-life situations that other couples can see themselves in. We want them to know that if we can do it so can they. Our goal is to have couples see positive images of Black Married Couples. We were saddened to hear that so many marriages fell apart during the pandemic. We actually had the very opposite experience.
Tammy: We love the message you both send as you are embarking on the mission of healing and saving marriages. What does this work mean to you both?
Carita: We both believe that healthy marriages are the cornerstone of healthy families. We also know that marriage is not easy, but marriage is definitely worth it. Our mission is to help and heal as many marriages as possible. We want couples to know that they are not the only ones going through this. Every relationship has its storms. Sometimes you can think you are on an island alone when in reality, there are thousands experiencing what your marriage is experiencing. When couples read our books, we want them to know that there are people who have been through but are now in bliss, and we are rooting for them to do the same.
Tammy: Many marriages ended in divorce during the COVID-19 Pandemic. How has that time helped reset or bring your marriage closer together?
Carita: The pandemic brought us closer together. We talk about this in the book how Leon was very intentional about creating an oasis for me as I was the only person in my home that left for work every day. We literally were known for the backyard party. This is where the title was derived. “Just Dance With Me” because we danced a lot during the pandemic, but it allowed us intimacy and communication like we never experienced before.
Tammy: Any upcoming book signings or events to promote “Just Dance With Me”?
Carita: We are so excited to announce that we are in the planning stages of our first “Just Dance With Me” Couples Retreat. The retreat will take place in late summer or early fall. This is going to be super fun and will include lots of couples activities, a few speakers and lots of dancing. We are looking at Miami, Las Vegas, or San Juan. Follow our social media pages so that you can be a part of this incredible event.
We are also scheduling a mini book tour through cities in the southeast focusing on marriage ministries and couples groups. If you would like us to visit your area contact us. We are bringing the books and the party.
Tammy: What else would you like our readers to know about you and the work that you do?
Carita: In November of 2021, I walked away from my six-figure job and turned my prayer ministry, “Everything Prayer Inc.” into an official 501c3. We offer an online daily prayer and inspiration live on FB and IG, as well as annual Prayer Conferences that reset the lives of attendees to become more “prayer conscious.” Everyone around me thought I was crazy, but I just knew that there was more for me to do. When I made the announcement at the top of 2022, the outpouring of support was incredible. I was able to raise $3500 in 24 hours. That’s when I knew God had my back.
I also founded Resetability Inc because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of small businesses and individuals. Resetability is the act of taking one’s mindset back to factory settings. Back to where you were fearless and confident, and you would not accept no for an answer. I wanted to pour my expertise back into the community. We offer sales consulting and coaching on the 5 step sales call process. We are building confident, successful, high-producing salespeople all across the globe. I am extremely passionate about sales training and coaching, and I have spent my career leading award-winning teams. I know what it takes to turn it around. Let’s hit #reset and change the trajectory of your business.
Resetability Inc is also helping aspiring authors with our A-list Book Coaching Services. We are committed to ensuring their voices are heard through self-publishing. Our authors benefit from 1 on one or group coaching instruction. Our 90 Day Self Publishing Course is ideal for first-time publishers or experienced authors. We walk them through writing award-winning manuscripts and give recommendations on creating eye-catching covers, back sales copy that really markets your book, interior format, and design. We stay with our clients all the way to final publishing.
Tammy: What advice would you give married couples that are currently in a rocky season of married life?
Carita: My advice to couples who are in a rocky season of marriage is to pray for your spouse daily and never go to bed angry with each other. You can agree to disagree, but life is way too short and is not worth carrying yesterday’s drama into a new day.
