Author Spotlight: Denise M. Walker

Author Denise M. Walker

Like many others, Denise M. Walker has walked through many obstacles, struggling to overcome depression, rejection and fear from youth to adulthood. However, today, with Christ, Denise can be described as nothing less than an overcomer.

Denise M. Walker is a pastor, wife, mother, podcaster, editor, experienced educator, and writing coach. Denise has educated youth for 20 out of her 22 years in the field of education. Most of her career has been serving middle grades and mentoring preteen and teen girls. She is the founder of Hope-in-Christ Ministries, Inc. and the owner of Armor of Hope Writing & Publishing Services, LLC. In addition to her own writing ministry, as an entrepreneur, Denise serves the Christian literature and children’s books community of authors, publishers, coaches, and aspiring writers. She is also the creator and facilitator of the Hope-in-Christ Book Club Facebook group, the host of Hope-in-Christ w/Denise and Building Literacy & True Identity podcasts. Her ministry’s mission is to lead others to the truth of Christ through encouragement, education, and restoration.

Denise has written several blogs on her Hope-in-Christ Ministries platform. To date, she has penned five books: two Bible strategies journals, two YA Christian fiction novels for teen girls (My True Identity Series), and a manual for aspiring Christian writers. Denise has also co-authored several anthologies. Get better acquainted with the author below.

Fancy: When did you begin your walk with God?

Denise: I began my walk with God almost 20 years ago.

Fancy: What inspired your career in education?

Denise: God gave me a heart for children, especially in middle grades. In addition, I have always loved reading and writing and helping others build their literacy.

Fancy: When did you begin writing?

Denise: I began writing devotionals based on scripture several years ago. In 2015, I then created a blog and continued posting my devotionals. I published my first book in 2017.

Fancy: Have you completed your latest project, “Hannah’s Heart” and can you tell us more about it?

Denise: “Hannah’s Heart” is book two in the “My True Identity” teen series. “Hannah’s Heart” is about young Hannah Monroe trying to overcome her past trauma. She thought things would get better once going to live with her father, but her pain increases and the pressures of teen life unfold.

Fancy: Did you survive child abuse or what inspired the concept of this book?

Denise: I am a survivor of child abuse. “Hannah’s Hope” and “Hannah’s Heart” are based on my journey, but many parts are fictionalized.

Fancy: First acknowledging there is a difference between disciplining a child and child abuse, do you believe in disciplining children and if yes, how so?

Denise: Children need boundaries and guidance. Therefore, I believe in disciplining them appropriately. Simply taking things away and setting expectations ahead of time have helped us tremendously with our son.

Author Denise M. Walker Fancy: You write within several genres. Do you have a preference for a certain one?

Denise: I write YA/middle grades novels and Bible study journals. In addition, I am moving into the arena of Christian Fiction for women. I don’t prefer one over the other. I love them all. It is all ministry.

Fancy: Do you have a writing routine and if so, what is it?

Denise: I have tried to start daily writing routines, but things often come up. Because of my schedule as a full-time educator, editor, and writing coach, I have to schedule my writing during my breaks.

Fancy: How do you practice self-care?

Denise: I practice self-care by spending time in prayer and in my personal Bible journaling time. I also take time out to spend with my husband and son as much as possible. Finally, I spend alone time shopping or browsing stores and even reading a good book.

Fancy: Do you have any other projects or events that you care to share?

Denise: I am working on a women’s inspirational novel, “Barren Womb”. I expect it to release by the summer. In addition, I am working on my second Bible study strategies book and a girls’ mentoring journal.

For the third year in a row, I will attend the Christian Book Lovers Retreat in October as one of their featured authors. I feel blessed to be able to participate.
