Fancy: How would you describe your swagher? What makes Kendra, Kendra?
Kendra: My swagher is activated because my life isn’t dictated by the moods and thoughts of others. I am both an individual and an extension of the Cosmos. Through independent thought and analysis, I take a proactive role in my life by bearing the responsibility of my choices. What makes Kendra, Kendra? My life is dedicated to developing the talent/gifts of others.
Fancy: So you were a teen mom of three by 18. What was life like for you?
Kendra: Life for me as a teen mom by the age of 18 was very difficult. I had to juggle so many responsibilities,s and I had little time for myself. I remember riding the bus with my three babies – one in the stroller, one holding onto the stroller, and one in my baby carrier and going to get groceries from the store. My mornings were especially busy, as I remember having to be up by 4 am each day in order to: do a light workout, get bathed and dressed; bathe and dress my children; cook breakfast; straighten up my apartment and then get out the door in time to catch a series of buses in order to drop the children to daycare/ school and then to get to work on time. It was an exhausting time that built up my character, strength, and perseverance.
Fancy: How did you change your situation, like what steps did you take to bring about more stability?
Kendra: I changed my situation when I embraced the mindset that I am a beautiful, purpose-driven child of God. I had to realize that I had the power within me to command greatness. The world does not define who I am. God has given us the key to freedom; however, we must be willing to put the key into the lock and turn it for ourselves.
Fancy: What led to you writing your book, “Dropping Jewelz: Guiding Principles to Help Girls Live Their Best Life†and can you tell us a little about it?
Kendra: I wrote my book because as a teen mom, I did not have a lot of support. I wished I had the methods to get myself out of situations that I felt trapped in. I met a lot of young women along my journey who were also looking for support and direction. I wrote this book for them.
Fancy: I know the word “girls†is in the title, but would you say the book is a good read for women as well?
Kendra: I have received amazing feedback from not only teens (girls and boys), as well as men and women.
Fancy: Do you have a writing routine?
Kendra: I do have a writing routine. I start off with prayer and music to help center and balance me.
Fancy: How do you practice self-care?
Kendra: I practice self-care by exercising, reading, being in nature, and spending ample alone time to meditate and pray.
Fancy: You do a lot within the community as well. How do you balance your work and your life or do you seek harmony instead?
Kendra: I must consistently assess my projects and self-given responsibilities weekly in order to ensure I am using my time and energy wisely. I think its important to do introspection often in order to maximize your results.
Fancy: Do you have any upcoming events or projects that you care to share?
Kendra: Yes, I do! I am giving a keynote speech at the First Annual Black Author Book Drive on February 22, 2020, in Philadelphia. Tickets are available now on Eventbrite!
