Fancy: How would you describe your swagher? What makes Tamala, Tamala?
Tamala: Wow! Great question. I truly have not put much thought into this question. All I can say that I’m a child of the most High God. I am only trying to work out God’s plan and purpose for my life. Being happy with who I am, having a positive outlook and attitude, having a positive identity in who I am and feeling good about my personal and social self is what describes me. So basically, I am just living and pursuing a life that pleases God and helps others along the way.
Fancy: What sparked your interest in writing?
Tamala: Actually as a young girl, I kept a diary of my daily functions and things that I faced. As a young girl who was a victim of bullying in school, I began writing until I was a young adult in my 20’s. My inspiration and the spark were always to help others and inspire and encourage them with words from devotionals and poetry and to share my testimony with others. Writing has always been my passion and my purpose. When I write, I’m in my zone and in my element; it’s an amazing blessing.
Fancy: Do you categorize yourself as a Christian author?
Tamala: Yes, I do categorize myself as a Christian author. My writings are focused on Christ, and I choose to write more faith-based books and inspirational, spiritual books because this is my calling. All writers choose their targeted audience in which they have been called to write about. Ultimately, as Christians, we are to glorify God in all we do, which means, writing too. His desire is for us to be His spokesperson. We are to point others to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. This is a high calling and not one to be taken lightly. Our words have power, whether we speak or write them. Our words can either bless or curse. So of course, I choose to bless.
Fancy: While I’m sure you don’t want to tell us the whole story, can you share a little about what the readers can expect in your “Unspoken†Memoir?
Tamala: I published my memoir in 2019, and it’s been more than a blessing to others than I thought was possible. It has been a journey for me. I share a lot in my book “Unspoken†My Past My Pain, My Story. I actually thought about not writing it, but I felt it would at least help or encourage someone. In my book, I talk about years of bullying and dealing with adversities, brokenness, delays, and setbacks that have been my stepping stone for what I have been called to do even now. Readers should expect to be encouraged and possibly even cry. Those who have already read the book often say that I mirrored their lives in the book. So I’m sure it will touch your heart.
Fancy: Do you plan to write any more children’s books in the future?
Tamala: Yes, I do plan to publish more children’s books. It’s surprising that you mention that. I’m currently working with illustrators for two manuscripts that I wrote for children over 10 years ago. I am excited to share more books of lessons to be learned for children.
Fancy: How did you venture into podcasting?
Tamala: This venture is one of divine intervention. One night I decided I wanted to start a podcast but it was only words flowing out of my mouth. We must be careful about the words we speak, rather good or bad, because you may just manifest what you ask for.
I spoke it into the universe and not later I met a young lady who was featured in a magazine Writers Life alongside me and her story mentioned a radio show she hosted. I took it upon myself to contact her and we discussed me doing my own show. Eventually, I ended up speaking with the producer and that was it. I actually wrote down the name of my show at the time “Spiritually Speaking with Tamala Coleman†only two years prior in a journal. It’s amazing how things came together. So long story short, I’ve hosted this show weekly for two years with over 78,000 listener stats.
Fancy: Do you have any tips for other aspiring podcasters?
Tamala: Podcasting has become much bigger now than it was years before. My tip for anyone aspiring to be a podcaster would be first to know your audience and to whom you have been inspired to reach. Don’t think too hard about what you are doing just do it. Many times I felt when I first started was to compete with others, but I soon got over it. Anyone aspiring to do podcast for whatever reason should share, encourage and inspire collaborate and not compete. Focus on what you have set in your mind to discuss rather it be Christianity, politics, or awareness -whatever it may be. Let your voice be heard!
Fancy: How do you practice self-care?
Tamala: Wow! I try to practice self-care almost daily. I have a time set aside each day and before I leave home to conquer the world. My focus is to first pray and speak daily affirmations over myself because challenges and unexpected things do happen. So you must be prayed up and know to remind yourself who you are before the day starts. I end my days as well with meditation and prayer for another day’s journey.
Fancy: Do you have any other projects or events that you care to share?
Tamala: I am so excited to announce a new show “Amazing Grace†with Tamala Coleman on Faith Broadcast in which I have been blessed to own and host weekly. Also, as the visionary I am, I am publishing a collaboration book with other authors. I expect it to be ready by the summer of 2020. Currently, I’m finishing manuscripts for two other co-collaborations and last but not least producing my third stage play in the fall of 2020.
