The Barter Black Pop-Up is bringing a fresh approach to entrepreneurship and economic empowerment to the DMV, inviting Black business owners and consumers to experience bartering in real time through an innovative community-driven system.
Taking place on May 31, 2026, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Studio Heir in Fort Washington, Maryland, the event is designed to demonstrate how business owners can exchange value without relying solely on traditional cash transactions. Instead, participants use Barter Bucks℠, a proprietary trade-credit system created by Barter Black®, to buy and sell products and services within the community. (Eventnoire)
While bartering is often associated with two people directly exchanging goods or services, Barter Black® has expanded the concept into a broader ecosystem where members can earn trade credits from one business and spend them with another.
“The purpose of this event was to show bartering happening in real time in a way that feels simple and useful,” said Nicole, founder of Barter Black®. “Barter Black® was created to go beyond traditional bartering where two people have to directly swap items or services. Instead, we use trade credits called Barter Bucks℠ inside our community.”
At the pop-up, vendors and attendees can use Barter Bucks℠ to conduct transactions on-site, creating opportunities to build relationships, gain exposure, and access products and services without immediate cash expenditures.
“This gives people a chance to see how they can offer their products or services, earn Barter Bucks℠, and then use those credits to get something they need from another business owner in the community,” Nicole explained.
The event also coincides with National Barter Black® Day, an initiative that encourages Black entrepreneurs to collaborate, exchange resources, and circulate value within their communities. Organizers say the movement is rooted in the belief that economic empowerment grows when business owners support one another rather than compete for limited opportunities. (Eventnoire)
“The goal is to show what it looks like when entrepreneurs support each other through a shared system where everyone can win,” Nicole added. “It’s about building a community where businesses help each other grow, not compete against each other.”
For entrepreneurs looking for creative ways to expand their networks, access new resources, and strengthen community connections, the Barter Black Pop-Up offers a firsthand look at how collaboration can become a form of currency.
