BET’s First-Ever Advisory Board Is Here — But We’re Paying Attention to the Full Picture

BET just made an announcement that has everybody talking — and it deserves more than a headline.

The network has formed its first-ever Board of Advisors, and the names are not small. Bob Johnson, the man who founded Black Entertainment Television in 1980 and built it into a cultural institution before selling it to Viacom for roughly $3 billion, is returning to the fold. Joining him are Queen Latifah, LL Cool J, NFL Executive VP Troy Vincent, Lazard President Raymond J. McGuire, and Paramount Skydance TV Media Chair George Cheeks. Six people. A lot of power in one room.

BET President Louis Carr framed it clearly: this board exists to ensure BET continues to serve and advance the community — not just to grow as a business. That’s the right thing to say. The question the culture is asking is whether it’s also the thing they mean.

Here’s why that question matters right now. This announcement comes at the same moment that BET+ is shutting down and folding its content into Paramount+. BET+ was supposed to be the network’s answer to the streaming era — a dedicated, Black-owned space for our content on demand. Its absorption into a larger platform raises real questions about visibility, prioritization, and what it actually means for our stories to have a home versus just having access to a shelf.

Bringing Bob Johnson back — alongside the cultural credibility of Queen Latifah and LL Cool J and the financial muscle of McGuire — signals that BET knows it needs to earn trust right now, not just announce it. Whether this board has real influence over those decisions or serves as a goodwill gesture remains to be seen.

What we do know is that Black entertainment media is at an inflection point. And the people in that room have more than enough experience to know the difference between being advisory and being impactful. We’re watching to see which one this turns out to be.

The BET Awards are weeks away. The conversation is already happening. Where do you stand?
