Black Authors Festival: Darlene Williams’ Bold Vision for Literacy

Darlene Williams, President of Black Authors Festival.

The Black Authors Festival has become one of the most inspiring cultural and literary events in the country. At the center of this growing movement is Darlene Williams, the President of the Black Authors Festival, whose vision combines the power of books with advocacy for literacy, free speech, and representation.

Ranked by USA Today as one of the nation’s top new festivals, the Black Authors Festival brings together acclaimed Black authors, readers, youth leaders, and the community for a weekend filled with panels, book signings, live music, art exhibits, and screenings. For Williams, the event is more than just a celebration—it is a call to action.

The Vision Behind the Black Authors Festival

During an in-depth conversation on CEO Chatter LIVE, Williams explained how her lifelong love of reading inspired her to launch the Black Authors Festival.

“Reading is a passport that no one can take away,” she said. “It allows us to travel, grow, and connect. I wanted to create an event that honors that power, while raising resources for marginalized communities.”

This year’s theme, The Power of Literacy, was inspired by her husband’s journey from illiteracy to earning two master’s degrees and becoming an adjunct lecturer. “His story shows that literacy can change lives,” Williams said. “We want people to know it’s never too late to open that door.”

Fighting Book Bans and Amplifying Voices

The Black Authors Festival is not just about literature—it’s also about advocacy. Williams works with New York State officials to draft legislation combating book bans and censorship, which disproportionately affect books by Black authors.

“If we allow book bans to silence us, we risk erasing our stories,” she said. “The Black Authors Festival stands as a powerful reminder that our voices will not be erased.”

What to Expect at the Black Authors Festival

This year’s festival includes:

  • A land dedication honoring Indigenous people

  • Panels with prominent authors and leaders

  • Film screenings under the stars

  • A fine arts exhibit by emerging young artists

  • The introduction of a youth author, showcasing the next generation of voices

Attendees can also look forward to a live DJ, an all-white after-party, and breathtaking waterfront views at the Sag Harbor venue.
