Every season, we have different trends to look forward to, compliments of the fashion industry. One trend that will never go out of style is the ability and power to be creative and expressive – something the black community has coined for generations. I would like to highlight a few of my favorite Black Designers this fall season. They create accessories and statement pieces that will not only compliment any outfit but will also enhance your personal vibe.Â
AVG (All Very Goods): This is one of my favorite accessory brands for the season. All Very Goods is a brand based in Washington, DC, that has a beautiful collection of bandanas, scarves, pendants, and buttons that are true statement pieces with cultural brilliance. According to the AVG website, “This series of bandana designs uses Adinkra symbols, colors, and patterns from Ghanaian textiles and Haitian art, Dutch wax print fabrics, and the traditional Asian and North American bandana layouts. Together they create a cohesive collection that speaks to adaptation, representation, and cultural evolution.”Â
Chalk Jewellery: An architect by the name of Malaika Carr is the founder and creator of the amazingly eclectic brand, Chalk Jewellery. Inspired by cityscapes and structures, Carr incorporates her love and admiration for architectural design in the creation of her fine jewelry line. Geometrically formulated, each piece is an artistic rendition of simplicity and fine art. Just in time for the fall season, this designer has a beautiful pair of earrings named “Nalla Earrings Dusk” that are perfect for an easy transition.Â
Ashya: “Rooted in travel, cultural awareness, and the act of unifying style and utility” is the description that is beautifully written in the about section of the Ashya website. If you are looking for a great and unique look for a handbag, this dynamic duo, Ashley Cimone, and Moya Annece, have made it their business to contribute to our style. Very sleek and polished looks for both men and women to rock this season. In addition to their personal success, the duo has also teamed up with the designer, Michael Kors in creating a unique line of bags.Â
Shades Of Shades: There is nothing better than a great pair of sunglasses and these are by far my favorite! Shade Of Shades specializes in creating “luxury inclusive eyewear” – giving everyone a very chic “nude” experience. They have a “Complex⢠Eyewear Shade Finder (where customers can) find the best nude match for your skin tone” as well as a “MAKEUP COMPATIBILITY FINDER where customers can match up (their) favorite makeup shade with Shades of Shades Eyewear to find (their) best nude compliment match.”
Shekudo: I am in love with these handcrafted shoes! If you want something different for the season, in earthly tones or a beautiful, dramatic print, this is the brand to try. According to the website, “Shekudo was founded in Sydney, Australia, (and) began as a women’s clothing brand – drawing on heritage, life experiences, and a wearable art aesthetic. Now under the sole creative direction of Akudo Iheakanwa, the brand relaunched into footwear and accessories moving its base across the Indian Ocean to commence production in Lagos, Nigeria, going from 4 to 14 artisans in just a year. With this move, the brand hoped to shed more light on the local artisan and craftsmanship scene whilst integrating some of the age-old techniques and overlooked local resources into its own contemporary aesthetic.” The Ilamoye Mule is a great textured look for a smooth transition from Summer to Fall.
