At the heart of Black excellence lies resilience, creativity, and a deep sense of purpose—and for James Johnson III, a Political Science major and Theatre minor at Virginia Union University, that excellence is more than a concept—it’s a lifestyle. As the reigning Mister Maroon and Steel, James leads with a powerful blend of advocacy, artistry, and authenticity that reflects the very spirit of the HBCU experience.
“Being an HBCU student to me personally means embracing a legacy of resilience, culture, and excellence,” James shares. “It’s about being part of a community that celebrates Black history, identity, and empowerment.” His commitment to Black excellence is rooted in purpose and inspired by leaders like his pastor—a VUU professor—and the late Chadwick Boseman, whose path from Howard University to global impact deeply influenced James’ own decision to attend an HBCU.
At VUU, James brings his unique swag by fusing performance and leadership. Whether he’s on stage or organizing campus events, he moves with intention and heart. “My swag is all about showing up authentically, inspiring others, and using my gifts to make VUU vibrant, expressive, and united.”

For James, Black excellence is a legacy forged from the ashes of struggle. “VUU was founded by formerly enslaved people. It reminds me that Black excellence isn’t just about success—it’s about rising above challenges and paving the way for future generations.” He envisions a future where his love for politics and theatre merge to elevate unheard voices through powerful storytelling and socially conscious films.
In five years, James plans to own a creative studio dedicated to empowering Black artists. With the support of Virginia Union University, he’s sharpening his voice and preparing to lead a new wave of creatives who embody Black excellence unapologetically.
To high school students considering HBCUs, James offers this advice: “You’re not just choosing a school—you’re stepping into a legacy… Believe in your greatness—and let your HBCU help the world see it too.”
