Black Music Honors is an annual celebration of Black music that honors the best of the best in each genre for the culture! Produced by Central City Productions, this production has been honoring hip-hop, gospel, urban writers, and music innovators since 2016, and I had the privilege to attend one of the biggest nights in music last week.
Some of the past honorees include Big Daddy Kane; Shirley Ceasar, Faith Evans, Whodini, Bebe and Cece Winans; Jody Watley, Tevin Campbell, Fred Hammond, Slick Rick….and so on. I mean, it is literally the Who’s Who of African American music culture! Each year Atlanta’s elite and the biggest stars of our time come together to honor these legends in a grand fashion as only we know how to! Each honoree is honored with a collaboration of their hits performed by some of the best vocals in a star-studded television production that matches the same energy, if not better, than the BET Awards.
This year, comedian DeRay Davis and former Destiny Child member LaToya Luckett host the 8th Annual Black Music Honors at the Cobb Performance Center. This is their third year hosting and providing great synergy and comedic moments throughout the night as we enjoyed a great night of music!
The 2023 honorees are Missy Elliott, SWV, Jeffrey Osborne, The Hawkins Family, and the legendary Evelyn “Champaign” King!! We enjoyed musical tributes from Lil Mo, Dave Hollister, Kelonte Gavin, Tina Campbell, and Kevin Lemons Higher Calling Choir, to name a few. There were several highlights of the night and musical greats throughout the evening that I won’t spoil for you…but I will say New Orleans Juvenile set the crowd on FIRE!!!!
Set your calendars to tune in during Black Music Honors beginning June 3rd at 8 PM EST on the Stellar Network for the premiere! You can also catch the rebroadcast on Juneteenth on Bounce TV at 7 PM EST. Be sure to check your local listings not to miss this historic night of music.
