Last week my interview with The Ebony Mashup was released. I enjoyed speaking with LaShaunda and Mike, the husband and wife team of co-hosts, about the importance of having a strategy and an end goal.
We discuss other interesting stuff as well, but give it a listen. I share the benefits of strategic planning towards the end of the interview.
No time to listen? Well, here are the three benefits.
A clear strategy helps to create the vision and direction of the whole organization.
- Direction- Strategy provides direction and once you have direction you can then break down what needs to be done to fulfill your vision because then you can create action plans.
- Prioritization- Strategies help us prioritize, which so many business owners struggle with, and aligns our activities. With a strong strategy, one can more easily distinguish between what’s beneficial to their desired outcome. So strategies also help with decision making because it serves as a business compass.Â
- Accountability-  When you have a strategy in place, it’s easier to hold you, your team, vendors, and whomever else accountable and establish more commitment. I struggled with this when I wasn’t as strategic and it was like nothing was getting done and then I’d discover that whomever I was counting on didn’t understand their part in the process but there was never really a process. But now you have more of a process and everyone should know their part. And the strategic plan will clarify who does what.
I can tell you first hand, not having a clear strategy can and will have you all over the place ready to pull your hair out. I’ve been there. I am like the poster child of not having a real strategy, but I made a conscious decision to change that.
