Chaka Cotton’s journey is a testament to resilience, creativity, and a deep commitment to her clients. From launching an innovative “Underground Railroad” initiative during the Covid-19 pandemic to her current work as a licensed continuing education provider in Illinois, Chaka has always been driven by a people-first mentality. As she embarks on a new chapter in Atlanta, we dive into her journey, exploring how her personalized approach to beauty services continues to make a difference in the lives of her clients. Whether you’re a beauty professional or simply passionate about the power of self-care, Chaka’s story offers valuable insights and inspiration for the industry’s future. Let’s dive in below.

Fancy: Your “Underground Railroad” initiative during the pandemic was both innovative and impactful. Can you share more about how you developed this idea and its role in helping your business thrive during such a challenging time?

Chaka: My husband and I have been entrepreneurs for almost two decades now, and our main goal has always been to take care of our people. We noticed that our clients weren’t just suffering physically but emotionally, too. Most people don’t realize how much therapy goes into a style session with your barber or stylist. We had to get creative and develop our own little “Underground Railroad. “ We definitely made sure we stood on top of our safety precautions, but the agenda was clear.

Fancy: As a licensed continuing education provider, you play a crucial role in shaping the next generation of beauty professionals. What inspired you to focus on education, and what are some of the key trends you emphasize in your courses?

Chaka: I was mainly inspired by the educational part of the industry because I’ve seen too many people who need more information. I’ll look from afar, saying to myself, “They would be a “beast” if they just added one simple feature!” Then, I helped them connect the dots and gave the “missing piece” to their puzzle. The “I GOT IT” moment gave me instant gratification, knowing that I helped someone reach their goal. That fueled my fire, and I’ve been going ever since!

Fancy: Your transition to Atlanta marks an exciting new chapter. How do you plan to bring your unique approach to the beauty industry to this new market, and what opportunities do you see for growth there?

Chaka: Networking has always been a fun thing for me because I’m a talker. I love meeting people, sharing our gifts and talents, and showing people how I, myself, or my brands can add value to their lives. Considering that Atlanta is the breeding ground for filming and TV production, the opportunities to grow my brand “Cinema Stylez”  are endless! We’re going to keep the talent camera ready ranging from glam to special effects!

Fancy: You’ve focused on creating personalized experiences that enhance clients’ self-esteem throughout your career. How do you stay people-centric in a fast-paced and evolving industry, and what advice would you give beauty professionals looking to build lasting client relationships?

Chaka: I always felt like no matter how much or how fast the industry evolves, attention to detail is more important than treating people like they are on an assembly line. I want my people to know that I remembered their tender spots, generational alopecia, or individual desires. To build a real relationship with your client, you should talk to your clients, build trust, and be honest about if you can address their needs.

Fancy: How would you describe your swagher? What makes Chaka, Chaka?

Chaka: Well, I like to live out loud, being bold, unapologetic,  and on the edge… so I would say that my swag is a mixture of rockstar with a little tomboy antics, all while wanting to look like a glamour girl, lol.
