For Denetra Jackson, scent is more than fragrance — it’s a bridge to joy, healing, and connection. As the founder of Whiff and Nibble Food Themed Gifts, she transforms food nostalgia into handcrafted candles and soaps that feel like love in a jar. From peach cobbler and sweet cereal bowls to rich cheesecake and Southern kitchen vibes, each creation tells a story — one that invites you to slow down, breathe deep, and remember the sweetest parts of life. With decades of business experience and a heart for community, Denetra isn’t just selling candles — she’s curating moments that comfort, empower, and spark joy.

If Whiff and Nibble Food Themed Gifts Peach Cobbler Skillet Candle had a soundtrack, the song would be?
Denetra: “Sweet Thing” by Rufus & Chaka Khan
Why this song?
Denetra: Because the Peach Cobbler Skillet Candle is a sweet thing in every sense:
- Warm, sensual, and nostalgic — just like Chaka’s voice and that rich peach cobbler aroma.
- It gives off Southern soul food energy — like Sunday dinners, satin robes, and someone lovingly calling your name from the kitchen.
- When the wicks are lit, it’s not just a candle — it’s a mood, a memory, a vibe.
- The fragrance hits you like the first few notes of the song — instantly recognizable, comforting, and unforgettable.
Lighting this candle feels like being wrapped in warmth and love…
And “Sweet Thing” sets the tone for exactly that.
You’ve turned food nostalgia into a healing art form. What was the first scent or dish that ever made you feel emotionally safe?
Denetra: What a powerful question. For me, it would be the scent of warm peach cobbler fresh out of the oven — sweet, sticky peaches bubbling under a golden crust, with hints of cinnamon and butter swirling in the air.
That scent meant I was safe, seen, and loved.
It reminded me of being tucked into a kitchen full of laughter, gospel music playing in the background, and my grandma, Ruth Dugan cared enough to make something from scratch just to make us smile.
It wasn’t just dessert — it was a hug in a dish… a reminder that joy and comfort could live side by side, even in the hardest times.
That’s exactly the kind of healing I try to pour into every Whiff and Nibble candle.
Your products spark joy through scent and design. Have you ever had a customer tell you a Whiff and Nibble Food Themed Gifts gift changed their day — or their life?
Denetra: One of the most heartfelt stories we’ve received comes from Michael Muse, a customer who purchased nearly 10 Whiff and Nibble candles — not for himself, but for a dear friend who lost his sense of smell during COVID.
His friend, once a passionate foodie, could no longer taste and enjoy the flavors that once brought him so much joy. So Michael did something incredibly thoughtful — he gifted him some of our food-themed candles in hopes of sparking emotional memories through scent and design.
From Peach Cobbler to Froot Loop to Cherry Cheesecake, each candle became more than a gift — it was a gesture of love, a reminder of comfort, and a symbol that joy can still be felt through memory and intention.
At Whiff and Nibble, this is why we create what we do.
These candles aren’t just cute or clever — they’re tiny tools for connection, comfort, and healing.
Thank you, Michael Muse, for showing us the true power of thoughtful giving.

What’s one healing lesson from your personal journey that’s “baked into” every product you create?
Denetra: One healing lesson from my journey that’s baked into every Whiff and Nibble product is this:
Joy is still possible — even after pain.
After going through a devastating divorce and surviving an abusive marriage, I needed a way to heal without numbing myself. I used to reach for sweets to soothe the hurt — until I realized what I was really craving was comfort, connection, and a sense of control.
So instead of eating the pain, I started pouring it into something creative — and that’s how Whiff and Nibble was born.
Every candle, every scent, every playful design is a reminder that healing doesn’t have to be heavy. It can be sweet. It can be silly. It can smell like your grandma’s cobbler or your childhood cereal bowl. It can even make you laugh.
My products are more than gifts — they’re permission to feel good again.
In a world obsessed with speed, your brand celebrates the sensory. How do you stay grounded and intentional as a creative entrepreneur?
Denetra: In a world that’s obsessed with speed, Whiff and Nibble chooses to celebrate the sensory — because we believe healing, joy, and connection take time.
As a creative entrepreneur, I stay grounded by returning to my “why”:
To craft experiences that help people pause, breathe, and feel something real.
I stay intentional by:
- Designing with the senses in mind — If it doesn’t spark nostalgia, comfort, or delight, it doesn’t make it to the shelf.
- Protecting my peace — I make space for quiet reflection, because clarity fuels creativity.
- Letting joy and purpose lead — Each candle is poured with intention, not just wax. You can feel the love in every detail.
- Listening to the people who matter most — Our customers are more than customers… they’re family.
At Whiff and Nibble, we lead with love — in every interaction, every product, and every story we share. Whether someone buys one candle or ten, we want them to know they’re seen, valued, and cared for.
Because in the rush of the world, sometimes all someone needs is a scent, a smile, and a reminder that they matter.
What does “scented storytelling” mean to you — and how do you choose which memories to bottle next?
Denetra: “Scented storytelling” to me is capturing moments, emotions, and memories in a fragrance that speaks louder than words. It’s about using scent as a bridge to transport people back to their happiest, most comforting times — the smells that tell the story of who they are and where they come from.
When I create a new candle, I think about:
- The memories that bring joy and healing
- The aromas that spark nostalgia and connection
- Stories from my own journey and the journeys of my customers — because our shared experiences inspire me.
I choose which memories to bottle next by listening closely — to what people miss, what they long for, and what makes their eyes light up when they talk about it. Whether it’s a childhood breakfast cereal, a slice of homemade pie, or the scent of a Sunday kitchen — those are the moments I want to freeze in time and share.
For me, “scented storytelling” isn’t just about fragrance — it’s about inviting people to relive their sweetest stories, one whiff at a time.

Has your time in the mortgage and automotive industries shaped how you lead as a Black woman business owner in the creative space today?
Denetra: Absolutely — my background in the mortgage and automotive industries has deeply influenced how I lead Whiff and Nibble as a Black woman business owner in the creative space.
Here’s how:
- Discipline and structure: Both industries demanded precision, accountability, and strong process management. That foundation helps me run my business efficiently and professionally, even while embracing creativity and playfulness.
- Resilience and adaptability: Working in sectors that often faced challenges and rapid changes taught me how to pivot, keep calm under pressure, and find solutions — skills I use every day as an entrepreneur.
- People-first leadership: In mortgages and automotive, success depends on trust and relationships. That taught me to lead with empathy, listen deeply, and treat every customer, partner, and team member like family.
- Breaking barriers: Being a Black woman in industries where I was often “the only one in the room” gave me the confidence to claim my space boldly and authentically in the creative world.
All of these experiences have shaped not just how I lead, but how I show up — with strength, grace, and a commitment to uplift others through Whiff and Nibble.
Whiff and Nibble is about joy, but also empowerment. What advice would you give to a woman who’s lost her spark and wants to reinvent herself creatively?
Denetra: If you’ve lost your spark and want to reinvent yourself creatively, know this first: your spark never truly goes out. Sometimes it just needs space, time, and permission to breathe again.
Here’s what I’d say:
- Be gentle with yourself. Reinvention isn’t about rushing or forcing change. It’s about listening closely to what truly excites your heart — even if it feels small or uncertain at first.
- Start with what brings you joy. For me, it was the sensory comfort of food scents that sparked something deep inside. Find your “peach cobbler” — that one thing that makes your soul smile.
- Give yourself permission to play and experiment. Creativity isn’t about perfection. It’s about curiosity, fun, and discovery. Allow yourself to try, fail, and try again without judgment.
- Surround yourself with love and support. Whether it’s a mentor, friends, or a community that gets you, connection is fuel. You don’t have to do this alone.
- Remember your story is your power. Your experiences — all of them — are unique gifts that shape your creative voice and vision.
Above all, believe that your reinvention is a beautiful journey — one that’s waiting to be written, one joyful step at a time.
What’s a scent or food theme you’ve always wanted to turn into a product, but haven’t dared to release… yet?
Denetra: Oh, that’s a fun one!
I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of creating a candle inspired by sweet potato pie with vanilla ice cream — it’s such a beloved classic, especially in Southern kitchens. Capturing that perfect blend of warm spices, creamy sweetness from the pie, and the cool, smooth vanilla ice cream swirl is a challenge. I want it to feel cozy and indulgent, without smelling too sugary or artificial.
It feels like a bold, heartfelt scent that could become a fan favorite once perfected — sparking all those cozy, festive memories of family gatherings and comfort.
So, it’s definitely on my “one day” list — a scent that’s nostalgic, comforting, and a little daring to bring to life.
You’ve built a community around nostalgia and novelty. How do you balance being a creator and a cultural curator?
Denetra: Building Whiff and Nibble has been a journey of being both a creator and a cultural curator, and balancing the two is something I approach with intention and respect.
As a creator, I’m inspired by my personal stories, emotions, and the joy that food-themed scents bring. I get to dream up playful, comforting products that spark nostalgia and delight.
As a cultural curator, I carry the responsibility of honoring the memories, traditions, and experiences that shape our collective identity — especially within the Black community and beyond. That means listening deeply, learning continuously, and ensuring that the stories I share through my products are authentic and uplifting.
Balancing these roles means:
- Creating with purpose, not just aesthetics — every scent and design reflects real stories and meaningful connections.
- Amplifying voices and memories that deserve to be celebrated, even if they’re small or overlooked.
- Keeping my community at the heart — because they’re not just customers, they’re family who share their stories and inspire what comes next.
Ultimately, I see Whiff and Nibble as a space where creativity meets culture — where joy, history, and healing come together in every candle lit.

What’s the biggest misconception people have about running a product-based brand rooted in fun?
Denetra: One of the biggest misconceptions people have about running a product-based brand rooted in fun is that it’s all play and no hard work.
While fun and whimsy are at the heart of what we do at Whiff and Nibble, behind every delightful candle is countless hours of dedication, precision, and grit.
People often don’t see the late nights spent perfecting scents, the relentless focus on quality, the challenges of finding the right manufacturers, or the careful balancing act of creativity with business strategy.
They also don’t see the times when sales are slow but bills still have to be paid — the pressure of keeping the dream alive when cash flow is tight.
Running a fun brand doesn’t mean it’s easy — it means you work passionately to make joy accessible and authentic for every customer.
In fact, the fun is what fuels the hustle, and the hustle is what makes the fun possible.

How do you hope Whiff and Nibble will shift the conversation around self-care, healing, and Black joy?
Denetra: I hope Whiff and Nibble shifts the conversation by reclaiming self-care, healing, and Black joy as vibrant, accessible, and deeply personal experiences — not just trends or buzzwords.
Too often, self-care is portrayed as a luxury or indulgence, especially for Black women who’ve historically been expected to carry burdens without pause. Whiff and Nibble challenges that narrative by celebrating joy in the everyday, the power of nostalgia, and the healing found in simple, sensory moments.
But this conversation isn’t just for Black women — our brothers suffer silently, often feeling that vulnerability is uncomfortable or even unsafe to express. We want to remind them — and everyone — that it’s okay to verbalize feelings, to be open, and to seek healing.
Through our food-themed candles and gifts, we create spaces for Black joy that are unapologetic, playful, and rooted in culture and memory — reminding people that healing can be sweet and fun.
Ultimately, I want Whiff and Nibble to be a movement that:
- Honors the complexity of Black experiences with love and light
- Encourages Black women and men to prioritize their mental and emotional well-being without guilt or shame
- Builds connection through shared stories, scents, and smiles
- And shows the world that Black joy isn’t just surviving — We thrive!
What legacy are you crafting — one scent, one gift, one smile at a time?
Denetra: The legacy I’m crafting — one scent, one candle, one smile at a time — is one of healing, joy, and cultural celebration.
I want Whiff and Nibble to be remembered not just as a brand that made fun food-themed candles, but as a movement that gave people permission to feel, to remember, to reconnect with themselves and the world around them.
Each candle is a love letter to nostalgia — to Saturday mornings, grandma’s kitchen, family cookouts, or that one dessert that made everything feel okay. It’s about reminding people that joy is still possible, even after pain. That softness is strength. That our stories matter.
My legacy is about creating safe spaces where:
- Black joy is seen, celebrated, and sustained
- Self-care feels soulful and sincere, not commercialized
- People feel safe to laugh, cry, remember, and heal
If one person lights a candle and feels just a little more whole, a little more held — then that’s the legacy I want to leave behind.
