In celebration of Father’s Day, SwagHer Magazine’s “Daddy’s Girl” series shines a heartfelt spotlight on powerful father-daughter bonds that have shaped lives and legacies. This special feature honors Dr. Pamela Gurley — a best-selling author, speaker, entrepreneur, and literacy advocate — as she opens up about the incredible man she proudly calls “Dad.”

Please tell us about yourself.
Dr. Pam: I’m Dr. Pamela Gurley — a speaker, best-selling author, podcast host, and passionate advocate for literacy and empowerment. As the founder and CEO of Clark and Hill Enterprise and IAMDRPGURLEY, as well as the President of the Brown Girl and Brown Boy Literacy Foundation, I dedicate my work to inspiring others to break barriers, embrace education, and lead with purpose.
My journey has always been driven by a deep belief that literacy, writing, and speaking are superpowers — one that transforms lives, open doors, and build stronger communities. I’ve authored several books focused on psychosocial and social-emotional development for children, as well as social advocacy, and I enjoy sharing actionable insights through keynotes, panels, and workshop presentations across the country. Through my podcast, “Herspiration Happy Hour,” I create space for honest and authentic conversations that empower women and amplify diverse voices.
Whether I’m writing, speaking, or leading my foundation, my mission is to spark motivation, challenge norms, and empower others to realize their fullest potential lies within. Every day, I strive to make a meaningful impact — one story, one conversation, and one empowered life at a time.

We’re excited to learn all about your Dad. Please tell us about him.
Dr. Pam: My dad, Ronald Gaskins, is truly remarkable — he’s done what not many men I know would do. Although I’m not his biological daughter, he accepted me before I entered this world, signed my birth certificate when I was born, and has never treated me any differently from my sisters. In fact, I’m the daddy’s girl of the family.
He served 23 years in the Army before retiring, which speaks volumes about his dedication and resilience. He is also a lifelong, die-hard Washington Commanders fan. He talks so much junk all football season long if you’re a fan of any other team! As a matter of fact, he is what I would call a sports junkie — literally watches sports or the sports channel nearly all day no matter what sport it is.
In February 2022, he suffered a stroke that affected his left side, but he’s been incredibly determined in his rehabilitation, working hard every day to regain his strength and independence. Watching his journey has only deepened my admiration for him.
How would you describe your relationship with your Dad?
Dr. Pam: My relationship with my dad is pretty damn special. I am, without a doubt, a daddy’s girl. Growing up, he affectionately called me “Hollywood,” a nickname that still resonates within me as I look at the trajectory of my life. Not in the sense that I became an actor, but I have been able to establish a public profile doing what I love.
I also love that we text daily and talk often, which helps us maintain a close bond no matter what life brings. Since his stroke, I’ve stepped into the role of his medical Power of Attorney, and advocating for his health and well-being has only brought us closer, which I did from the moment it happened. He even accepts me being hard on him when needed about his diet and exercise.
What do you love most about your father?
Dr. Pam: What I love most is our ability to confide in each other without judgment. There’s a deep trust and understanding between us — I know I can always count on him, and he knows he can count on me. That mutual support is something I cherish every day and never take for granted.
What does being a Daddy’s Girl mean to you?
Dr. Pam: Being a daddy’s girl means having an unbreakable bond built on love, trust, and unwavering support. It’s knowing I have someone who sees me, believes in me, and stands by me, no matter what. It’s a relationship that has shaped who I am and continues to inspire me to be the best version of myself.

Can you share a favorite memory or moment with your Dad that you’ll never forget?
Dr. Pam: I have so many fond memories that stand out that I have never chosen a favorite. From going to work with him and running PT with him, to him coming to my high school to pick me up after a fight with another student and he nearly fought the principal because he didn’t like what she had to say about me defending myself (my mother literally had to come to the school and get both of us {laughing}). Oh, there are so many stories that make my dad and me reflect and laugh. As I reflect on the past, I can say that one of my fondest memories now is dancing with my dad at my wedding, which took place a little over a year ago, on February 24, 2024. Even with a walker, he was the life of the reception. While I don’t focus on his stroke, I do realize that as I get older, so does he, and that life can change in any moment.
What is one core value or piece of advice your father gave you that still guides you today?
Dr. Pam: One core value my father instilled in me is the importance of perseverance — never giving up, no matter how tough things get. He’s always led by example, showing me that resilience and hard work can overcome even the most difficult challenges. That lesson guides me in everything I do.
What would you like to say to your dad this Father’s Day?
Dr. Pam: Dad, thank you for loving me unconditionally and always showing up for me. Your strength, kindness, and unwavering support mean the world to me. I am proud to be your daughter and grateful for every moment we share. Happy Father’s Day — I love you more than words can express. I will always be your “angel baby” and “Hollywood.”
