Dr. Velma Trayham Shares Why Mentorship Matters for Minority Women

Award-winning business and diversity strategist, mentor, and founder of MMA DrVelma Trayham has mentored over 5,000 women of color nationally in April 2022, Trayham was also awarded the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award presented by President Joe Biden and Vice President, Kamala Harris at the “The Gathering of Queens” Ending Poverty Through Entrepreneurship in Houston, TX (her native hometown).

How does finding the right mentor play a part in the success of a business?

Finding the right mentor, in any business industry is key. A mentor can assist you in producing and expanding your bottom line while guiding your business to the next level. You will only grow to the level and capacity of the knowledge you’re given or based on where those teachings come from. So if you have a mentor that has little to no experience, chances are they will not be able to help you get to the next level in your professional goals.

How have your life experiences played a part in your journey?
It was through my life experiences that I learned how to FAIL, FORWARD, FAST. Knowledge doesn’t just come from books or role models, it also can be learned from experiencing life. Without life experience, it is impossible to the possible wisdom that life can teach us all. Your past life experiences should shape the trajectory of your future. It is not how you start, its how you finish on your journey!- Dr. Velma Trayham.

What advice would you give to someone who is unsure about pursuing their dreams?

Faith without works is dead. When you have nothing to lose, you have everything to gain. Keep asking yourself “what will be defined as my legacy that I leave as my mark in this world?”

Every day is a day to Embrace your GO MOMENT.
