EatOkra, the leading mobile app designed to connect users with Black-owned food businesses across the United States, has been named a 2025 James Beard Foundation Impact Award honoree. This prestigious recognition celebrates EatOkra’s dedication to economic empowerment, culinary heritage, and community connection within the Black food ecosystem.
What Is EatOkra?
EatOkra is a digital directory and mobile application that makes it easy for users to find and support Black-owned restaurants, cafes, food trucks, bakeries, and more. By creating greater visibility for these businesses, EatOkra helps Black culinary entrepreneurs reach new audiences, increase brand awareness, and unlock new revenue streams. The platform currently features thousands of listings and is trusted by consumers who want to spend their dollars intentionally while enjoying rich, diverse food experiences.
The Story Behind EatOkra
EatOkra was founded in 2016 by Anthony and Janique Edwards, a husband-and-wife team who had recently relocated to Brooklyn, New York. At the time, they lacked a stove and refrigerator in their apartment and relied on local food spots for nourishment. As they explored their new neighborhood, they sought out welcoming spaces that served food tied to their cultural roots.
That personal journey sparked the creation of EatOkra, a platform that would go on to support thousands of Black-owned culinary businesses and serve as a bridge between culture, commerce, and community.
Why the Name “EatOkra”?
The name EatOkra is rich with symbolism. Okra, a plant brought to the Americas from West Africa during the transatlantic slave trade, is a staple in many dishes across the African Diaspora. Known for its role in traditional comfort foods, okra represents strength, resilience, and continuity. EatOkra draws inspiration from this legacy, working to preserve Black culinary traditions while nurturing future growth.
Mission and Impact of the EatOkra App
The mission of EatOkra is to support a vibrant network of consumers and Black-owned businesses while preserving the culinary heritage of the African Diaspora. More than just a food directory, the app is a cultural tool and economic engine that empowers users to make conscious dining choices.
Through curated listings, user reviews, and community-driven features, EatOkra creates a digital space for discovery and advocacy. The platform helps Black food entrepreneurs build visibility, grow their customer base, and thrive in an industry where equity and access are ongoing challenges.
