Empire’s Jussie Smollett Gets Candid with SiriusXM’s Clay Cane

On Wednesday, FOX Empire’s Jussie Smollett had a lively sit down with journalist Clay Cane on SiriusXM’s The Clay Cane Show. It’s no denying that Cane and Smollett’s conversation was definitely one to hear. The actor/singer was his charismatic and honest self as Cane asked some wonderfully engaging questions.  During the one on one, Smollett shared why he firmly believes that his Empire character, Jamal Lyon, should have a black boyfriend. He speaks on the importance of representation and how the television show has a “beautiful opportunity” to positively portray a healthy romantic relationship between two black males. Cane and Smollett even spoke on how the award winning film Moonlight was basically a game changer for the black LGBTQ community because it shined a light from a different angle on homosexuality in the black community.

Cane also asked Smollett how he felt about the comments made by his close friend, Raven Symone, when she was on ABC’s The View. During a particular episode, the actress shared with co-host Whoopi Goldberg that she didn’t identify with being black or gay, but that she’s an American and she’s human. Smollett enthusiastically replied that he most definitely told her his views in the most lovingly, blunt way possible. Smollett told Cane that he loves Raven dearly, but that sometimes she says thing that she shouldn’t. He said that at one point Raven even joked that the two of them should do a segment called “No No Raven” where Smollett goes in on Raven in a loving yet straightforward way about things she shouldn’t say. At the end of the day that’s what good friends are for. It takes a strong amount of love to chastise someone and never lose love or respect for them.
