For Black Women, By Black Women: Our Visibility Matters

Greetings Sis,

As I have dove into the world of visibility to better assist SwagHer clients, I realize there is so much more to the word than what meets the eye. This is amusing because, in its current usage, one might assume that it only means to be seen and then take that at face value. However, when we as Black women talk about visibility, it should not be just a buzzword. There is a growing visibility gap for not just Black women, but also Black businesswomen.

While there are no studies that can show the direct comparison of news coverage about Black women with that of our counterparts, we know from Pew Research that only about 6% of journalists are Black. Not to say that others cannot write about Black people or Black women, but who’s to say how often that might be.

Visibility for Black women is about preserving Black women’s history and the impact that we have made, not just in the US, but all over the world. We are really out here doing the thang, and that should be announced and celebrated. But we currently live in a time where we are watching the history of our ancestors being whitewashed and destroyed. Personally, I feel like almost every day there is a new slap across the face in the headlines—every day there is someone else telling me I do not matter. I just happen to share the same world as them.

Black girls, women, and businesswomen deserve more. We deserve fair representation so that we, as a whole, know the power we hold. It extends beyond just us and our children, but also to our children’s children and further generations. Visibility is about creating legacy,  and that is why we are launching SwagHer Society, our safe space to grow your brand, expand your visibility, and connect with a community of Black women who are building, thriving, and winning together. This multi-membership idea has been on my heart for a while, but I must credit Coach Natalia Nicholson with giving me the push to step out and build it.

Featuring all the SwagHer content, including our digital issues and podcast, plus our services, events, and visibility products that we offer, and sisterhood within our growing community of over 300K for the low, SwagHer Society is coming full force in almost exactly one week!
