For Tiana Thornton, being an HBCU student is more than just pursuing a degree—it’s about being seen, valued, and empowered. “Being an HBCU student means you are more than just a number,” she shares. “Your dreams and aspirations are nurtured with the belief that you can achieve greatness.”
A 2025 graduate of Hampton University with a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences and a concentration in Community Health Promotion, Tiana represents the spirit of Black excellence instilled in every Hampton student. Coming from a proud lineage of HBCU graduates from Tuskegee University, Savannah State University, and Talladega College, she felt a deep purpose to continue the legacy her family began. “I wanted to be surrounded by people who look like me—goal-oriented, self-driven, and motivated. Hampton University was the perfect place for me to continue that legacy,” she reflects.
Bringing Her Swag to the Yard
For Tiana, style is not just about clothes—it’s a declaration of ambition. “I dress for the life I desire and aspire to have: bold, extra, and unapologetically over the top,” she says. Her vibrant, fearless fashion choices mirror her approach to life: confident, intentional, and inspiring.
Rooted in Black Excellence
At Hampton, the message is clear: “We are ‘The Standard of Excellence’—excellence is in our motto.” This standard shaped Tiana’s academic journey and fueled her commitment to serve her community. From encouraging voter participation to advocating for equal healthcare opportunities, she strives to be a helping hand to those who came before her and those who will come after.
Leadership & Service at Hampton
Tiana’s college years were filled with service and leadership. She was initiated in Spring 2024 into the Gamma Theta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, where she served as the chapter’s Hodegos. She also served as Membership Engagement Coordinator for Black is Gold, intern Vice President for the Student Recruitment Team, and Events Coordinator for Black Girls Vote. Additionally, she was a charter member of Eta Sigma Gamma Health Science Honorary Society, participated in the Black Ladies in Public Health Cohort, and volunteered with organizations like the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Spring for R&R.

Future Focus
In five years, Tiana sees herself traveling the globe, combining a master’s in Emergency Management with a nursing career to provide disaster relief worldwide. Already an avid traveler who has visited seven countries, she dreams of exploring the Seven Wonders of the World while continuing to mentor and support HBCU students.
Her advice for high school students considering an HBCU? “If given the opportunity to leave your hometown and go off to school, do it. Build your community, grow your confidence, and embrace everything an HBCU campus has to offer… Choose the school that challenges you, even if it’s far away. Failure has no place in your heart—give it everything you have, and the community will come.”
