If You’re Not Trying to Build a Relationship, Then What are You Doing?

One thing I’ve noticed with clients in the past, or those who may have inquired about our subscription services, which include public relations and creative services paired with our advertising services, is there is always someone who wants instant gratification. They want to see the results of the campaign immediately, and that’s not how public relations works.

Public Relations is about relationship building. That’s what the word “relations” in the term equates to “relationships.” And we all know good relationships aren’t usually microwaved overnight but built over time.

However, people often don’t want to be patient. They just want to blast their messages across their social networks and get straight to the point of selling. They don’t worry about building trust or credibility with their audience.

In public relations, you are NOT merely selling or pushing your products, but rather you are selling yourself and your company. This is where branding comes in because it helps to keep the message and everything else, including your look, consistent.

Also, you’re not just looking at your target audience, you’re also looking at your employees, your stakeholders, and anyone who may be involved with or watching your brand.

Another similarity between public relations and relationships is that we tend to be attracted to those who we can relate to. So when others see that likeness of themselves in us, then they are more open to building relationships. One would be surprised how many people research you before they finally make a purchase.

If you don’t value connecting with your following and building a network, then public relations probably makes no sense to you. It seems like a waste of money that you can use elsewhere.

Also, because I’ve noticed this too, if you are not ready to open up to the media, PR isn’t for you either. No one wants to hear what they can read on the homepage of your website.

Yes, advertising is useful and can yield results, but PR can take you much further. So I ask you if you’re not trying to build a relationship, then what are you doing?
