After only a few days of joy, Kevin Hart voluntarily stepped down as the 2019 host of the Oscars. The comedian made the decision to step out of the way after controversy began to surface over tweets that Hart posted back in 2009-2010. The Philly native may have posted the homophobic tweets, but he’s apologized for his behavior in the years since. Hart explained how hosting the Oscars has always been a dream of his, but he refused to continually apologize for something that he’s already owned up to. The Night School star says that he stepped down because he didn’t want a controversy surrounding him to distract from the individuals being honored that evening.
When news first broke of Kevin Hart being the host of the 2019 Oscars, scheduled to air on February 24th, there were mixed emotions among the public and a few celebs. It was only a few days after the announcement that the internet trolls began coming for Hart’s past. Soon the Academy was giving the A-lister an ultimatum of apologizing or missing out on the opportunity he’s dreamed of all of his life. Since he refused to apologize for his old tweets, the Academy is now on the hunt for a host less than 3 months till show time. Many celebs have showed support for funny little man, others have expressed disapproval for his actions, and the rest have remained silent. Nick Cannon, one of Hart’s supporters, has retweeted some homophobic tweets by female comedienne’s that went ignored just to show how there’s an obvious difference in who can make which jokes and comments. Some celebs are even giving suggestions for other hosts. Actress Busy Phillips tweeted a list of diverse female emcee possibilities that included herself as well as Insecure star Issa Rae. Hart has since apologized for hurting anyone who was offended.
To come so close to your dream just to have it trampled on is more than frustrating it’s painful. It’s even more painful when others have done or are able to do the same things yet aren’t penalized in any way for them. Though the situation is messy, Kevin Hart seems to be handling everything with class. His support system and many fans are standing behind him and believe that he is not the type of man that others are making him out to be. It’s unclear who will be the 2019 Academy Awards host, but it is clear that every year there’s some type of controversy surrounding the Oscars.
