LaToya Covington Is Building Legacy in Real Time Through Literacy, Confidence, and Purpose

Smiling woman with short blonde curls in a green patterned blouse, gesturing with hands toward the camera.

There are people who create products, and then there are people who create impact. LaToya Covington is doing both. As an author, educator, mentor, and visionary, she has dedicated her life’s work to helping children and women see themselves differently—more fully, more confidently, and more intentionally.

Through The Gracie Brown Experience™, LaToya is creating more than stories. She is creating spaces where children feel represented, affirmed, and empowered to dream beyond limitations. And through Gracefully Becoming, she extends that same mission to women, helping them reconnect with identity, healing, and purpose.

With over two decades of service to children and families, LaToya’s work sits at the intersection of literacy, emotional wellness, representation, and legacy-building. In this SwagHer Spotlight, she opens up about purpose, impact, breaking cycles, and what it truly means to build something that outlives you.

Legacy in Motion

Fancy: You describe your work as “legacy in motion.” What does legacy mean to you in this season, and how are you intentionally building it?

LaToya Covington: Legacy, for me, isn’t what I leave behind; it’s what I’m building in real time. It’s the imprint I leave on identity. The confidence I help awaken. The belief I plant in someone who didn’t know they could carry it.

Legacy is not just memory—it’s transfer. What moves from me into others…and keeps moving long after I’m gone.

And I build it intentionally. In the stories I write, I shape how children see themselves.
In the spaces I create, I give language to confidence and self-worth. Through Gracefully Becoming, I strengthen the environments children grow in—by restoring the women who shape them.

I’m intentional about where I show up. What I say.How I leave people feeling.

Because legacy doesn’t happen by chance; it’s built through alignment, consistency, and purpose. And every day, in every room, I’m building something that will outlive me.

When Purpose Becomes Assignment

Fancy: With over two decades of service to children and families, what moments affirmed that this work was more than a career—it was your assignment?

LaToya Covington: After more than two decades working with children and families,
I’ve learned—if you pay attention, the work will tell you what it is. There came a point where it stopped feeling like a career and started feeling like a responsibility.

I’ve been in rooms where children carried more than their years. Where silence said what behavior couldn’t. And then—something would shift.

A child tries again. A voice comes back. A belief forms where doubt once lived.

Those moments don’t ask for recognition. They demand care. And that’s when it became clear—this isn’t about a role. It’s not about performance.

It’s about impact. It’s about stewardship.

Because when what you carry starts changing how people see themselves—
you realize…this is something you were entrusted with.

The Gracie Brown Experience™

Fancy: The Gracie Brown Experience™ is a movement rooted in confidence and literacy. What inspired its creation, and what gap were you determined to fill for children?

LaToya Covington: I saw the gap clearly—children learning how to read, but not how to recognize themselves.

I saw stories…but no mirrors. I saw brilliance…but no reflection. And I knew the issue wasn’t just literacy—it was identity, representation, and self-belief. That’s the gap I chose to fill. So I didn’t just create books—I created an experience.

The Gracie Brown Experience™ is both mirror and window—reflection and possibility in the same space.A place where children can see themselves clearly, hear themselves confidently, and imagine beyond what they’ve been shown.

Because when a child can see themselves—they stop following the story…
and start writing their own.

Why Representation Matters

Fancy: Your storytelling centers identity, self-belief, and representation. Why is it so critical for children—especially those who feel unseen—to see themselves reflected in the stories they read?

LaToya Covington: To be unseen doesn’t always look loud. Sometimes it’s subtle.

Repeated.

Internalized.

Children learn to adjust before they ever learn to fully exist.

And for those already feeling overlooked—that absence becomes identity.

“Do I matter?”
“Do I belong?”

Representation answers that—without permission.

It says:

You are here.
You are enough.
You belong.

And when a child sees themselves reflected—fully, honestly, powerfully— something shifts that cannot be undone.

Without that reflection, they shrink. With it—they expand into who they were always meant to be.

Writing With Joy and Intention

Fancy: As a children’s author, how do you intentionally weave messages of confidence and emotional growth into your stories while still preserving imagination and joy?

LaToya Covington: I don’t choose between magic and meaning—I write with both. There’s joy in the language. Rhythm in the story. Light in the experience.

But underneath? There’s intention.

I don’t just tell children what to believe—I let them feel it. Through characters who experience real emotions. Through moments where fear meets courage. Through turning points where belief wins.

Confidence is woven in. Healing is layered in. Growth happens naturally.

Because children don’t connect to lectures—they connect to experiences.

So the magic stays. The joy leads. And while they’re immersed—they’re building confidence, awareness, and identity in real time.

Because what a child absorbs quietly will show up loudly later.

And I write for who they are becoming.

Gracefully Becoming

Fancy: You also pour into women through mentorship and The Graceful Life Society. How does your work with women connect to and expand the impact of your work with children?

LaToya Covington:
Children don’t grow in isolation—they grow from what they see.So to reach the child, you must also reach the woman.

Gracefully Becoming is that extension.

When a woman sees herself clearly again— everything shifts. Her presence changes. Her language changes. Her children experience something different.

So I’m not stepping away from children—I’m reaching them from another direction.By strengthening the voices around them. By reshaping the environments they grow in.Because what a woman believes about herself becomes what a child believes is possible.

And that’s how impact multiplies—generation to generation.

Breaking Cycles and Building Legacy

Fancy: You speak often about breaking cycles and building legacy. What are some of the cycles you are most passionate about helping families and communities shift?

LaToya Covington:
Some cycles don’t look like problems— They look normal.

Silence.
Self-doubt.
Survival.

And I’m committed to breaking the ones that limit identity and possibility:

silence that teaches shrinking
doubt passed down as protection
“just getting by” as a mindset
emotional disconnection
limited vision

These cycles don’t stay in one place— They move through families and communities.

But I was not called to carry them forward— I was called to interrupt them. To name them. To dismantle them. To replace them.

With voice. With clarity. With healing that goes beyond survival.

Because cycles don’t end with time—they end with a decision.

Profit With Purpose

Fancy: One of your current goals is building a revenue-generating ecosystem. What does “profit with purpose” look like for you and your brand?

LaToya Covington: Purpose without structure burns out—so I built a structure.

For me, profit with purpose means alignment.

Every part of my brand serves something deeper:

Books that build identity
Experiences that shift perspective
Programs that transform communities

This is an ecosystem—intentional, connected, and sustainable.

Because when purpose is funded—it expands.

So profit isn’t the focus— it’s the fuel.

Fuel that allows the work to reach further, serve longer, and grow bigger than me.

Because I’m not just building something successful—I’m building something that sustains impact.

The Impact She Intends to Leave

Fancy: As your platform continues to grow, what impact do you hope your voice, your stories, and your work will have on the world around you?

LaToya Covington: I don’t measure impact by visibility— I measure it by transformation. I want my voice to reach the child who feels unseen and remind them they matter.I want my stories to rebuild confidence in the ones questioning their worth. I want my work to meet the woman starting again and remind her—she’s not behind. She’s becoming.

I want to create spaces where people feel seen, heard, and empowered. Because when identity shifts—everything shifts.

Decisions.
Generations.
Possibilities.

I want my work to go where I can’t. To speak where I’m not.  To remain after I leave.

Because real impact doesn’t announce itself—it echoes, multiplies, and transforms.

The Message She Wants to Leave Behind

Fancy: If your life’s work could leave one message with the next generation of children and women, what would it be?

LaToya Covington: Let me say this clearly—for every child and every woman coming after me:

You were never the problem. Not too much. Not too late. Not disqualified.

That was never your truth—just something you were given. And today—you give it back.

To the child:
You belong everywhere your dreams take you.

To the woman:
You are not starting over—you are starting from strength.

Everything you’ve been through didn’t break you—it built you.

So stand up.

Take up space.

Move like you know—even if you’re still remembering.

Because the truth is—you are not becoming her.

You are her.
