In the case of most journeys, it all starts with a dream. The dream to be a popular athlete. The dream to be a famous rapper. Those visions of prosperity serve as fuel to keep the individual motivated and focused on the task. The standard recipe for success is hard work, dedication, and a pinch of luck. Once those ingredients are incorporated, it’s time to travel down the road to success.
Rapper DaBaby started his journey in 2015 by releasing ‘Nonfiction’, his debut mixtape. The Charlotte rapper would continue grinding as he went on to release a total of twelve mixtapes. His introduction to the mainstream took flight in 2019. He was featured on the cover of XXL’s Freshman Class with new artists Megan Thee Stallion and Roddy Ricch. His debut studio album ‘Baby on Baby,’ was released on March 1st. The lead single ‘Suge’, peaked at number seven on Billboard Hot 100. DaBaby would spend the majority of 2019 on the Billboard Charts. Courtesy of his debut album ‘Baby on Baby,’ and his sophomore LP ‘Kirk,’ the hit-making rapper has charted a total of 20 songs on the Hot 100 that are either his songs or songs he was featured on. He has done collaborations with artists such as Drake, Moneybagg Yo, Nicki Minaj, Megan Thee Stallion, and Quality Control’s Lil Baby. Through hard work and dedication, DaBaby has positioned himself to be one of the most visible rap stars in the industry. His impressive work ethic paid dividends when confirmation came in reference to his song ‘Suge’, receiving multiple Grammy Nominations.
With the addition of new fame and fortune, DaBaby had an outstanding 2019. The year 2020 started off on a high note as DaBaby acquired the ultimate validation. On New Year’s Day outside of a nightclub in South Beach, music mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs shared a few words with DaBaby. The Bad Boy Records founder gave the 2019 XXL Freshman his blessing. “You’re the hottest in the game, you know what I’m sayin,” Diddy stated.
It’s surreal how one day you can receive the ultimate high and the next day you can be the recipient of a discouraging low. A couple of days after being praised, DaBaby was placed in handcuffs and escorted to a police vehicle. The authorities wanted to hear his input in reference to a robbery.
According to the police report, the concert promoter paid DaBaby $20,000, but DaBaby stated he was supposed to be paid $30,000. Allegedly DaBaby proceeded to rob the victim of $80, a credit card, iPhone 7, and then doused the victim with apple juice. The Grammy Nominated rapper was arrested when authorities discovered he has a warrant out of Dallas for organized criminal activity. The warrant stems from the September 2019 incident that took place in the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. Allegedly DaBaby attacked a food stand employee inside the airport. Also in 2019 while performing, DaBaby punched a fan who touched his chain, and in another incident, he was arrested in Charlotte, North Carolina after performing at the Bojangles’ Coliseum. He was cited for marijuana possession.
What started off as a ride down the smooth highway to success, is transitioning to a bumpy road of ups and downs. DaBaby will be held in Florida until the case involving the concert promoter is resolved. After that, he will be extradited to Dallas where he will face charges for the assault of the food stand employee.
