The streets of Columbus, Ohio, are grieving over Ma’Khia Bryant, 16, who was fatally shot and killed four times by a Columbus police officer on Tuesday. Bryant is the 34th person shot and killed by law enforcement in Ohio’s capital city in the past six years.
A slowed-down version of the body cam showed Bryant attacking two other people lunging at them with something in her hand. The officer, who has now been identified as Nicholas Reardon, fired his weapon several times. It was unclear what led up to the altercation, which was already happening when officers arrived on the evening scene. Bryant died at the hospital shortly after jurors in Minnesota convicted former Derek Chauvin of murdering an unarmed Black man, George Floyd. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating Bryant’s fatal shooting.
