Making Money Moves: Discover the Woke Money Movement

Woke Money Movement is a financial platform for us by us, founded by tax professional Catherine Mitchell, affectionately known as Ms Cat. Through her years of service at her two businesses, Flat Fee Tax Prep and Flat Fee Tax Software, Ms Cat has helped thousands of clients nationally. The visionary leader is now on the path to help even more masses with her latest venture, Woke Money Movement. Learn more about the movement and Ms Cat below.

Fancy: What sparked your interest in finance?

Ms Cat: Initially, my interest in finance wasn’t born out of a passion for the subject itself. Rather, it was a practical decision driven by a desire to improve my circumstances and stabilize my family. As a struggling artist running my production company, I was constantly in “survival mode,” grappling with the challenges of making ends meet.

The pivotal moment came when I realized I wanted more than just struggling to get by; I wanted to thrive and create a better future for my two children as a single parent. Transitioning into tax preparation and financial management wasn’t about a newfound fascination with numbers and investments; it was a strategic move to secure a stable income and lay the groundwork for financial security.

My journey into finance is a testament to the everyday person’s quest for stability and prosperity. While I may not have started with a deep passion for finance, my focus remains on building a solid foundation for my family’s future and ensuring that we move beyond mere survival to a thriving and fulfilling life.

Fancy: Can you tell us more about the Woke Money Movement?

Ms Cat: The Woke Money Movement is a transformative nonprofit initiative that emerged from a deep desire to empower and uplift the Black and Brown communities through financial education and resources. As the founder, my journey from struggling artist to financial professional inspired me to create a platform that gives back and supports others on their path to financial literacy and empowerment.

At its core, the Woke Money Movement serves as a “giveback” initiative, providing essential financial literacy resources tailored specifically for the Black and Brown communities. The motivation behind this movement stems from a sense of gratitude and a recognition of the

blessings received along my journey. I wanted to channel that gratitude into tangible support for others seeking to improve their financial well-being.

Woke Money serves as a vital cash flow connection, acting as the financial plug and comprehensive directory for individuals and families seeking financial resources. Our platform offers accessible tools, workshops, and educational materials designed to demystify financial concepts and empower individuals to take control of their financial futures.

Our mission goes beyond education; it’s about fostering a community where financial knowledge is not just a privilege but a fundamental right. By equipping our community with the tools and resources they need to make informed financial decisions, we aim to break down barriers and pave the way for economic empowerment and prosperity.

Fancy: What are five actionable tips for families and entrepreneurs on smart money management?

Ms Cat:

  1. Create a Budget and Stick to It: Establish a comprehensive budget that outlines your income and expenses. Track where your money goes each month and identify areas where you can cut back or optimize spending.
  2. Build an Emergency Fund: Set aside savings specifically for emergencies. Aim to have at least three to six months’ worth of living expenses saved up in case of unexpected financial setbacks such as medical expenses, job loss, or major repairs.
  3. Invest in Financial Literacy: Educate yourself and your family about personal finance and investing. Attend workshops, read books, or take online courses to understand key financial concepts like budgeting, saving, investing, and debt management.
  4. Diversify Income Streams: Diversifying income sources can provide stability and resilience for entrepreneurs and families. Explore opportunities for passive income through investments, rental properties, or side businesses.
  5. Plan for Long-Term Goals: Set clear financial goals for the future and develop a strategy to achieve them. Whether saving for retirement, funding your children’s education, or expanding your business, having defined objectives helps prioritize spending and investment decisions. Consider consulting with a financial advisor to tailor a plan that aligns with your specific goals and timelines.

Fancy: Can you share a few programs that can assist families and entrepreneurs during hard times?

Ms Cat: For entrepreneurs, they should look into SBA, Small Business Development Center, SCORE, and the Chamber of Commerce. If for families in the Texas area, contact 211 Texas, Benefits.gov,  and Housing Authority.
