As we are in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, Joshua T. Scott, a motivational speaker, author, and pastor, is rallying all business owners to get involved and take a stand. Staying in business is essential, but keeping our communities safe is just as important. If small business owners don’t lead from the front, who will we sell our products to? Yes, it’s a short term loss but a long term gain for the community! Ensuring that the community knows it’s not just about making money, but helping the community understand the severity of COVID-19 and how it affects communities of color (our communities).
Scott joined the #MASKUPHOU Campaign with Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner to be a community voice, someone people knew personally, and connect with the message.Â
#MASKUPHOU is a grassroots public health information campaign encouraging Houstonians to continue to safeguard themselves from potential exposure to COVID-19. The other business owners are Toi Benjamin of Trophy Wife Virgin Hair, Robert Swearington of Fort Bend Memorial Planning Center, Yalonda Newell of Unique Home Daycare Center.
Our communities need authentic leadership, leaders who will do what is best for everyone, not just those with money and resources, but those with a lack of access and support. Leadership is not just for government-level officials. Leadership is telling a child to stay home and not go out, telling your friends not to go to the local bar. We all have to play our part in keeping the community safe. It’s a long journey, but I believe we can do it together.
