Marsha Telfer Brings Caribbean Flavor and Cultural Pride to North Texas

In a dynamic profile exclusive to SwagHer Magazine, Marsha Telfer shares her inspiring journey as a multifaceted entrepreneur, balancing life as a restaurateur, real estate professional, and mother of four. Originally hailing from the Tri-State area, Marsha now calls North Texas home, where she and her husband have brought a vibrant taste of the Caribbean to the community with their celebrated restaurant, Reggae Jerk Hut. A bold advocate for cultural pride and self-confidence, Marsha opens up about the challenges and triumphs of entrepreneurship, motherhood, and redefining perceptions of Caribbean culture in America.

We understand that you’re originally from the Tri-State area; what brought you to North Texas, and how has Texas defined your success?

Marsha: I originally came to Texas because my husband was serving in the military and we were stationed in Fort Hood in Central Texas. Once my husband got out of the military, we made North Texas our home.

Texas has defined my success by instilling in me the ‘everything is bigger’ mentality that encourages pushing boundaries. Texas offers endless opportunities that allow my family and me to thrive. I also value the mentorship I’ve received from the diverse community here, which has helped me navigate challenges and grow both personally and professionally. Overall, Texas’ blend of opportunity, community, and perseverance has been integral to defining my success.”

We would love to hear your insight about navigating your career expansion from legal and real estate work to becoming a restaurateur. What challenges have you faced as a woman in business, and how did you overcome those particular moments?

Marsha: My career journey has been a unique blend of continuing my work in the legal and real estate sectors while expanding into the restaurant industry. Balancing both industries has allowed me to draw on my diverse skill set and apply it as a restaurateur. In legal and real estate work, I honed my ability to negotiate, understand contracts, and manage complex projects — all of which are vital in running a successful restaurant.

The challenges that I faced as a woman were significant! I faced challenges with contractors not taking me seriously as a woman. I also went through a learning curve as I navigated the complexities of the restaurant industry, from operations to customer service but my background in problem-solving and attention to detail helped me navigate this new world. Today, I find great fulfillment in creating a space where people come together to enjoy great food and company. I’m grateful that my diverse professional experiences have all come together to help me thrive in this industry.

What’s the most empowering decision you’ve ever made in your career, and how did it transform you?

Marsha: The most empowering decision I’ve ever made in my career was taking the leap of faith into entrepreneurship. It was a big risk, but I realized that by betting on myself, I could create my own path to success. This decision transformed me because it gave me the confidence to trust my abilities and vision. I’ve learned that as long as I believe in myself and stay committed to my goals, I can’t lose. Entrepreneurship has shown me the power of resilience, adaptability, and the incredible growth that comes from taking risks and trusting in my own potential.

Parenting is often described as a form of leadership. As a multifaceted entrepreneur and mother of four, how has being a mother prepared you to lead a business?

Marsha: Being a mother has definitely prepared me to lead a business in many ways. As a mother, you wear so many hats and constantly juggle various responsibilities, much like running a business. You must prioritize, stay organized, and keep things running smoothly, all while being adaptable to the unexpected. Leading by example is crucial, as children learn by observing, just like employees in a business. Patience is key — whether it’s nurturing growth or guiding others through challenges, both in the home and in business, patience allows you to stay calm under pressure and make thoughtful decisions. Ultimately, being a mother has taught me the importance of empathy, communication, and resilience — traits that are essential for successful leadership.

What’s one lesson you’ve learned from your community in North Texas that you’ve incorporated into your business philosophy?

Marsha: One important lesson I’ve learned from the rapidly growing community in North Texas is the value of adaptability and embracing change. As the area continues to expand, there’s a constant flow of new ideas, opportunities, and diverse perspectives. I’ve incorporated this into my business philosophy by staying flexible, being open to innovation, and continuously evolving to meet the needs of the community. I believe that being responsive to change and staying connected to the people around you are key to success in both business and in life.

What does the concept of “cultural pride” mean to you, and how has it shaped your vision for Reggae Jerk Hut?

Marsha: To me, cultural pride means having a profound respect and appreciation for one’s cultural heritage. My husband and I are both proud Jamaicans and Haitians, and we wanted to honor our roots as we shaped the vision for Reggae Jerk Hut. We are committed to preserving the authenticity of our cuisine, drinks, and atmosphere, ensuring that our cultural heritage shines through in every aspect of the restaurant.

What’s one belief or mindset you had to learn or unlearn to grow into the woman and entrepreneur you are today?

Marsha: I had to shift my mindset from thinking I had to focus on just one thing or be confined to a single box. Society often imposes limitations on women, and I wanted to release myself from those shackles. Instead of believing my dreams are unattainable and having a “Woe is me” attitude, I started asking, “Why not me?” If others can do it, so can I. With prayer, planning, and execution, I believe we can achieve anything we set our minds to.

How do you hope your restaurant influences perceptions of Caribbean culture in America?

Marsha: I hope Reggae Jerk Hut influences perceptions of Caribbean culture in a positive light in America. The news only shows the war, chaos, and unruly citizens of Haiti due to the challenges that the country is currently facing. The current situation in Haiti does not define who we really are. We are a strong, resilient community with a deep love for others. By combining both Jamaican and Haitian cultures demonstrates how the Caribbean culture comes together and embodies the meaning of One Love!
