I was talking with a friend when the subject of pillars for our business came up. When we talk about “pillars” in business, we’re really talking about the sturdy beams that hold everything else up. Think of your business like a house—if you don’t have solid pillars, the whole thing can wobble or fall apart. Pillars are simply the core areas that your business stands on and consistently comes back to.
For example, let’s say your brand is built on community, creativity, and consistency. Those three become your business pillars. That means every product you launch, every service you offer, every post you make should tie back to at least one of them. If it doesn’t, then it’s not really aligned with the foundation of your business, and that’s when things can start feeling scattered.
So in plain terms: your pillars are your “non-negotiables,” the guiding themes that keep your business focused, aligned, and strong. They are just like the friend who always tells you the truth, even when you don’t want to hear it.
For SwagHer’s next project, I’ve decided that the pillars are community, visibility, and wholeness. With these themes in mind, I am building something that is going to shake up SwagHer Magazine, and I am over the moon about it. I have put a great deal of work into this project, and there is still more to be done, but it’s going to be big and symbolize growth for SwagHer. This new project will also be a game-changer for Black businesswomen who are seeking growth opportunities and sisterhood.
I get excited when I think about it, because I know how desperately this venture is needed in business and entrepreneurship, and my pillars guided me here. It’s my new baby, and this week I will be rallying up my beta testers so that later they can share their feedback on things.
I’m inviting you all to take a sneak peek at what is to come. All that is required is signing up for the waitlist.
How to Establish Your Pillars
If you’re wondering where to start, here’s how you can begin building your own pillars:
- Reflect on your “why.” Ask yourself: what values or outcomes do I want my business to always stand for?
- Identify your strengths. Look at what you and your team naturally excel at. That’s often a clue to your foundation.
- Listen to your community. Pay attention to what your clients or audience consistently come to you for—that’s a sign of what they trust you to deliver.
- Choose 3–4 guiding themes. Too many pillars will make your structure shaky. Keep it simple, so everything you do can tie back clearly.
- Test and refine. Try them out in your messaging, your offers, and your decisions. If they don’t feel aligned, adjust until they fit.
Think of it as choosing the DNA of your brand—the few things you want people to always know about you, no matter what.
Closing
At the end of the day, your business pillars are more than just fancy words on a vision board. They are the compass that keeps you from drifting when things get hard, the anchor that holds you steady when the winds of change start blowing. May your pillars guide you toward opportunities that align, partnerships that make sense, and growth that feels good in both your spirit and your bank account.
Take the time to define them, believe in them, and let them guide you. Because when you know what your business stands on, you’ll never struggle to know where it’s headed.
