Meet the P&G Speaker: Tylia Flores

Tylia Flores is a 25-year-old born with cerebral palsy. Although her condition has affected her mobility, it has never affected her will and determination to make a difference in the world. Through her many life challenges and obstacles, she discovered her passion for writing. Tylia’s goal in life is to share her stories with the world. In doing so, she hopes to help others with disabilities realize that they, too, have the potential to make their dreams come true.

Fancy: How would you describe your SwagHer? What makes Tylia, Tylia?

Tylia: I would describe my SwagHer to be someone who has a very determined attitude and doesn’t allow her disability to be viewed as a negative.

Fancy: What is it like living with cerebral palsy?

Tylia: Living with cerebral palsy is like living in your own novel. You never know what will happen within the next few chapters, but there’s always a lesson to be taught in many plot twists.

Fancy: What sparked your interest in writing?

Tylia: What sparked my interest in writing was losing my good friend Daniel who also had Cerebral Palsy to cancer.

Fancy: I see you’ve already written your first book, and it sounds really interesting. Is the main character James a part of the special needs community? Do you plan for all of your main characters to be special needs?

Tylia: James is part of the special needs community because his son Noah has mild Cerebral Palsy. Yes, I do plan to write more books that focus on special needs because I feel like we need more authors to write about disability and acceptance.

Fancy: What made you decide to participate in Our Children’s Story Purple & Green Gala this year, or why do you think the gala is important?

Tylia: What made me decide to be a part of the purple and green gala was the fact that I wanted to support other advocates that are doing great things in the community. I wanted to bring awareness to having other people view the possibilities instead of the disability that often defines a person in society based on stereotypes.

Fancy: As for the gala, what are you looking forward to?

Tylia: I’m looking forward to connecting with others and embracing the community and its diversity.

Fancy: If there were one thing you would like our readers to know about the special needs community or being a part of it, what would that be?

Tylia: The one thing I want your readers to know about the special needs community is that we’re all full of possibilities, and we had dreams and goals just like everybody else.
