My First Time at The Roots Picnic: How I’m Preparing for the Ultimate Black Music Festival

As a first-time attendee gearing up for the 2025 Roots Picnic, I’m beyond excited to dive into this iconic celebration of Black music and culture. Here’s how I’m preparing for the weekend.

🎤 The Lineup: Who I’m Most Excited to See

The 2025 Roots Picnic boasts an incredible array of talent. Headliners include neo-soul legend Maxwell, rock icon Lenny Kravitz, and Philadelphia’s own Meek Mill. Other standout performers I’m looking forward to are GloRilla, Miguel, Tems, Latto, Pusha T, 2 Chainz, Jeezy, and of course, The Roots themselves.

  • Location: The Mann Center in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia

  • Start Time: Gates open at 1:00 PM each day

🚗 Getting There & Parking

Parking at the Mann Center is free, with main parking available at Belmont & Montgomery avenues. Additional parking can be found at the South Concourse or on 52nd Street.

🧳 What I’m Packing

  • Comfortable Attire: Lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for outdoor weather.

  • Footwear: Comfortable shoes for standing and walking.

  • Essentials: Sunscreen, reusable water bottle, portable phone charger in a small clear  bag.
  • Weather Prep: Poncho or light rain jacket, just in case, but definitely an umbrella.
  • Plus my media gear, of course. 

🍔 Food & Vendors

The festival will feature nearly 40 Philadelphia-area food vendors, offering a diverse range of culinary delights. I’m especially excited to explore the curated Black vendor village for unique merchandise and experiences.

🎶 Getting in the Mood

To get into the festival spirit, I’ve been listening to a playlist featuring artists from the lineup. Tracks like Maxwell’s “Ascension,” Meek Mill’s “Dreams and Nightmares,” and GloRilla’s “Yeah Glo!” are on heavy rotation
