Netflix to Adapt Oscar Winning Actress Lupita Nyongo’s Children’s Book “Sulwe” Into an Animated Musical

Netflix announced on Thursday that it is turning “Sulwe,” the best-selling children’s book by Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o into an animated musical. “Sulwe” was written by Nyong’o and illustrated by Vashti Harrison.  This is a story about a child who has dark skin and all she wants is to be beautiful and bright. The book itself talks about a story of colorism, self-esteem and learning that real beauty comes from within. The book was published back in October of 2019 by Simon and Schuster Books for young readers and was a New York Times Best-Seller.

Back in 2014 at the Oscars, Nyong’o won the Best Supporting Actress for “12 Years a Slave” that launched her career. She recently read “Sulwe” on “Bookmarks,” a Netflix show that features Black celebrities and artists reading children’s books from Black authors.
