In a world that often asks us to move quickly and carry our burdens quietly, spaces dedicated to slowing down, reflecting, and healing matter. This month in Rockville, Maryland, one organization created exactly that kind of environment.
Stillborn And Infant Loss Support (SAILS) hosted its Nurture the Whole You: Food, Healing, and Mental Wellness event at Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Rockville, MD, welcoming guests to a thoughtful, resource-filled experience designed to nourish both body and mind.
At the heart of the gathering was featured speaker Dr. Michelle Beadle Holder, who delivered a powerful presentation titled Mindful Eating for Everyday Life.
Dr. Beadle Holder opened with a personal reflection, sharing how witnessing her mother face a health challenge at an early age reshaped her understanding of wellness. That experience helped guide her toward a deeper exploration of how our daily habits — particularly around food — directly influence long-term health.
She then introduced attendees to the concept of mindful eating, encouraging them to move beyond autopilot and become more intentional about their choices. To spark reflection, she posed four simple yet revealing questions:
- What did I eat last?
- Why did I eat?
- Where do I eat?
- When do I eat?

The exercise led to an unexpected but meaningful realization among many guests: most admitted they often eat alone, a habit that can contribute to overeating or making less nutritious choices. The conversation gently challenged attendees to rethink not only what they consume, but also the environments and emotions surrounding their meals.
The learning didn’t stop at the discussion. Guests enjoyed freshly prepared lentil soup made from one of Dr. Beadle Holder’s own recipes, turning theory into a sensory experience. Each attendee also received a goodie bag containing lentils and two recipes to try at home, practical tools to support healthier routines long after the event concluded (make your own Lentil Soup).
Support for the gathering came from Black Physicians & Healthcare Network Montgomery County Maryland, reinforcing the shared commitment among local healthcare leaders to advance community wellness.
Beyond the featured presentation, the event created space for connection. Local professionals, providers, and resource organizations were present to speak with attendees, ensuring guests left not only inspired but informed about services available to support their wellbeing.
Notably, the event was free — a reflection of SAILS’ mission to remove barriers to care and make healing resources accessible to families who need them most.
And this is only one piece of the organization’s broader wellness initiatives.
SAILS is preparing for its upcoming 2026 Raising the SAILS Gala: Charting a Path to Healing, scheduled for March 28 at The Villa, Beltsville, Maryland. The gala will help fund therapy referrals, grief recovery tools, and financial assistance for families navigating the devastating realities of perinatal loss.

It is work rooted in compassion — and in the understanding that healing requires community.
Events like Nurture the Whole You remind us that wellness is not one-dimensional. It is physical, emotional, communal, and deeply personal. By bringing people together to reflect, learn, and access supportive resources, SAILS continues to model what intentional care can look like in action.
Because when we nurture the whole self, we create space not just to survive — but to truly heal.
