I remember always having some type of pet around growing up. We had pet gerbils, and I was always feeding stray cats, frogs, anything that was cute or slimy. My siblings and I had no problem caring for it/them. They are just like having children in a sense. If you are thinking of getting a pet, whether dog, cat, or a reptile, like a turtle, etc., here are some key tips you can use to decide if having a pet is the right fit for you.
Tip #1: Vet Visits Are Key to a Healthy Pet
You ever went to CVS and they have the advertisement of the pet clinic where you can get your pet the shots they need? Well if you are on a budget, take advantage of the local clinics to ask questions about your pet or voice any concerns you have so they can steer you in the right direction.
Tip #2: Proper Identification for Your Fur Baby
Listen, things happen and sometimes your pet gets sneaky. It is a possibility that your pet can escape at any time so it is best that you have their ID collar around their neck any time they go outside. A microchip is also a way to feel better in a case your pet gets away and gets returned to a shelter.
Tip #3: Cleaning! A Must!
I’m not saying you have to be a master groomer, but the cleanliness of your pet helps with their health and the health of their environment, as well as your health as their keeper. If you have a furry friend, it is imperative to keep their nails trimmed and fur coats clean of debris. Also, checking their skin to make sure they are free of fleas and ticks. Play areas and sleeping areas need to be clean and definitely make sure feeding areas are free of old food residue to ensure the health of your pet.
Tip #4: Training Your Pet
Unless your pet is going to be sheltered while with you, they need to have basic training in order for you to have less of a headache when they interact with others. Understanding “noâ€, when to eat, not to beg, not to jump on people, and to stay by you when you are out in public with your pet is very important. If you don’t have the time or energy, the best thing to do is invest in a trainer.
Tip #5: Healthy Eating Options are Good for Your Pet
Just like we need to be conscious of what we put in our bodies, we have to be conscious of what we feed our pets as well. You want foods that are easy on their digestive systems and foods that are high in protein and carbs. A happy pet allows you to rest easy knowing you are providing the best care for your babies.
Caring for a pet isn’t hard, but it is definitely work, and it’s much easier when you know more about what you are getting into.
