In this conversation, the woman behind the enigmatic name shares the inspiration behind her work, the lessons that shaped her, and why writing—like love—is an act of courage.
Fancy: You’ve described writing Her Heart’s Footprints: A Journey to Love as a full-circle moment. What was the spark that finally brought this story to life?
Poetically Enigmatic: I started writing poetry at a young age. Throughout the years, I knew that I wanted to write a book because I had a passion and desire to share my creativity with an added layer. It was also a challenge for my own personal growth as a writer. Then one day, I was listening to a song and told myself that I finally needed to sit down and write the book that I had always wanted to write. For me, when I am inspired to write, it’s a “nagging” feeling that won’t go away until I actually put the pen to paper. It consumes everything until I let the words, the ink, flow. This book is my first, and it’s a full-circle moment, as it combines my love of poetry with storytelling.
Fancy: The story of Nefertiti is deeply emotional and reflective. How much of her journey mirrors your own personal experiences with love and self-discovery?
Poetically Enigmatic: There are a couple of similarities between Nefertiti and me. One in particular would be understanding that you shouldn’t live your life based on other people’s ideas of what it should be. You are defined by your own definition. You have to find out what motivates you, makes you happy, and expand on it.
Fancy: Your writing blends poetry and storytelling beautifully. How did you approach merging those two forms in a way that feels both lyrical and raw?
Poetically Enigmatic: It wasn’t my intention to add poetry, at first. As the story developed, it felt only right to add it as a part of the main character’s depth. Each poem helps to tell her story on a different level that is raw and intentional.
Fancy: Blake, the character who seems to understand Nefertiti better than she knows herself, represents a powerful turning point. What did you want readers to take away from their dynamic?
Poetically Enigmatic: It would be to understand that love is a catalyst for growth from within and/or towards others.
Poetically Enigmatic: Blake and Nefertiti come from two different worlds. She is not the typical type of woman that he has been with. Nefertiti challenges him like he has never been challenged before. Blake is purposeful and calculated in ways that she is not used to. He allows her to be soft and not have the mentality that she has to be hard and guarded all of the time. So, this unique dynamic between them makes them vulnerable in ways that neither of them was expecting. They have a mutual yearning that seems to grab hold and take them on a journey that is a poetic, romantic, emotional rollercoaster.
Fancy: What lessons about healing and self-love do you hope readers will walk away with after finishing Her Heart’s Footprints?
Poetically Enigmatic: It would definitely be to prioritize yourself mentally and physically. Prioritize your needs, values, and goals. Be self-aware about your thoughts and feelings. You are worthy because you are simply YOU. YOU are enough. The right person will see it when the time is right. However, make sure that you see it when you look in the mirror.
Fancy: You mention being shaped by every breath, heartbeat, and musical note. How does music influence your writing process and emotional tone?
Poetically Enigmatic: Music is my biggest influence behind life in general. I have a writing playlist that is a collection of Jazz, Neo-Soul, and R&B, providing the spark that can light a fuse at any given moment, and could feature different songs at any time. Therefore, it was only fitting to have a playlist specifically for this book. As you read the book and listen to the playlist, you’ll understand why those specific songs were chosen. The first detail I notice about a song is the music. If I get a chill when it first tickles my eardrum, then it will usually be added to my playlist.
Fancy: As a Tennessee native with a lifelong love for poetry, how has your environment or upbringing helped shape your artistic voice?
Poetically Enigmatic: Growing up, I knew at an early age that I was “different,” meaning that I’ve always had a love for creating in different ways. Writing was and is the main one that has always been there.
Fancy: How would you describe your SwagHer? What makes Poetically Enigmatic and your storytelling style unique in today’s literary space?
Poetically Enigmatic: My SwagHer is not categorized in one particular genre. It’s a combination of several different types. Therefore, it is definitely a vibe of its own that wants to empower, uplift, celebrate, inspire, and connect on a deeper level that resonates within and spills into others, creating a repetitive cycle.
