In a bold and breathtaking musical journey, Anya Audette takes on the timeless work of Burt Bacharach in her latest album, Bacharach Reimagined: The Songs of Burt Bacharach. With over four decades of experience in the industry, Anya blends the soulful influence of Motown, the fire of protest songs, and the discipline of classical training with modern elements of jazz, R&B, EDM, and pop. The result? A genre-defying, emotionally rich tribute that speaks to both nostalgia and innovation. Through resilience, representation, and raw talent, Anya’s voice emerges as a performer, storyteller, activist, and visionary.

Fancy: Your new album, Bacharach Reimagined: The Songs of Burt Bacharach, takes classic hits and presents them in fresh, unexpected ways. What inspired you to reinterpret these timeless songs, and what do you hope listeners take away from this collection?

Anya: Reinterpreting Burt Bacharach’s timeless songs is a journey deeply rooted in both admiration and exploration. Bacharach’s music uniquely evokes a wide range of emotions through its intricate melodies and sophisticated harmonies. The inspiration to reinterpret his work stems from a desire to connect with the emotional depth of his songs while infusing them with a fresh perspective that reflects contemporary experiences.

In this reinterpretation, I aimed to bridge the classic essence of Bacharach’s compositions with modern interpretations that resonate with today’s listeners. Each song offers an opportunity for reflection and reinvention, allowing me to explore different genres, arrangements, and vocal styles. This creative process has been driven by a love of storytelling through music, honoring  Bacharach’s legacy while adding my unique voice to the narrative.

I hope listeners take away a sense of nostalgia paired with newfound appreciation for these iconic songs. My goal is for them to experience familiarity while discovering layers and nuances that speak to the present. Ultimately, I want this collection to resonate emotionally, inspire introspection, and encourage listeners to see these timeless pieces in a new light. Bacharach’s music has always possessed an incredible sense of depth and beauty, and through this reinterpretation, I aim to keep that spirit alive while inviting a contemporary dialogue around his work.

Fancy: You’ve blended multiple genres—jazz, R&B, EDM, and pop—into this album while honoring  Bacharach’s legacy. What was the creative process like in reimagining these iconic melodies while staying true to their emotional core?

Anya: The creative process of blending multiple genres— jazz, R&B, EDM, and pop—while reimagining Burt Bacharach’s iconic melodies was both challenging and incredibly rewarding. Staying true to the emotional core of his compositions required a careful balance between innovation and reverence for the original work.

  1. Deep Listening and Analysis:

Before diving into the reinterpretation, I spent significant time listening to and analyzing  Bacharach’s music. I sought to understand not only the melodies but also the intricate arrangements, lyrical themes, and emotional nuances that make his songs so enduring.  Identifying the essence of each piece was crucial; it helped me determine how to take the core feel of a song and translate it into different genres.

  1. Genre Exploration:

Blending genres involved experimenting with different motifs, rhythms, and instrumentation. For example, taking a classic Bacharach ballad and infusing it with the syncopated grooves of jazz or the lush synth textures of EDM required a thoughtful approach. I trained my ear to find moments within the melodies that could seamlessly adapt to different stylistic interpretations while maintaining the underlying sentiment.

  1. Collaborative Input:

I invited collaborators from various musical backgrounds—jazz musicians, R&B vocalists, and  EDM producers—to contribute their unique perspectives. This collaboration was fundamental in enriching the reinterpretation process, as each artist brought their own creativity, helping to breathe new life into the arrangements while honoring the original spirit of Bacharach’s work.

  1. Emotional Resonance:

Throughout the process, I focused on the emotional storytelling inherent in Bacharach’s songs. I  aimed to preserve the lyrical depth and emotional truths, ensuring that the reimagined versions resonate with listeners on a personal level. Integrating elements like heartfelt vocal delivery,  dynamic arrangements, and relatable themes helped maintain that emotional authenticity.

  1. Iteration and Experimentation:

The reimagining process required a lot of trial and error. I frequently revisited each track,  experimenting with different structures, harmonies, and stylistic elements. I listened back critically, refining the arrangements until they encapsulated both the original’s essence and the transformative qualities of the new genres I explored.

  1. Embracing the Unexpected:

One of the most enjoyable aspects of this project was embracing surprises along the way.  Sometimes, an unexpected sound or approach would emerge during the creative process,  leading to captivating moments that felt both fresh and respectful to the original. These instances of spontaneity often became pivotal points in the arrangements, guiding the direction of the final product.

By weaving together the rich textures of jazz, the emotive vocal lines of R&B, the infectious energy of EDM, and the catchy hooks of pop, I strived to create a collection that pays tribute to Burt Bacharach’s legacy while appealing to today’s diverse musical landscape.

Ultimately, the goal was to create a listening experience that invites both nostalgia and joy,  resonating with longtime fans of Bacharach and new listeners alike.

Fancy: Your journey in music has been shaped by an incredible range of influences, from Motown and protest songs to classical training and doo-wop. How have these diverse sounds influenced your vocal style and artistic approach?

Anya: My musical journey, shaped by such a rich tapestry of influences, undoubtedly plays a pivotal role in defining my vocal style and artistic approach.  Here’s a deeper look at how each of these genres has contributed to my creative expression:

Motown:

The vibrant sound of Motown has had a profound impact on your vocal style. The genre is characterized by powerful, emotive vocals and intricate harmonies. From artists like Stevie  Wonder and Aretha Franklin, you’ve likely drawn inspiration in terms of phrasing, vocal runs,  and the ability to convey deep emotion through music. The emphasis on storytelling in Motown songs has also influenced me to focus on the narrative quality of my work, enabling me  to connect with listeners on a personal level.

Protest Songs:

The raw authenticity and social commentary found in protest songs have likely cultivated my awareness of music as a vehicle for change. Artists such as Bob Dylan and Nina Simone have shown that music can critique society and inspire action. This has encouraged me to weave meaningful messages into my songs, using my platform to address important themes and evoke empathy. The urgency and passion in protest music have also likely influenced your vocal delivery, prompting you to channel deeper emotions in your performances.

Classical Training:

My classical training has provided a solid foundation for my vocal technique, enhancing my ability to control my voice and expand my range. Understanding music theory, harmony, and structure has enabled me to approach songwriting and arrangement with a well-rounded perspective. This background allows me to incorporate complex melodies and harmonies into my work, drawing from classical elements to elevate my overall sound and create a more nuanced and sophisticated vocal delivery.

My diverse influences shape not only my vocal style but also my artistic approach, leading to a multifaceted musical identity. By drawing from the emotional depth of Motown, the urgency of protest songs, the precision of classical training, and the charm of doo-wop, I create a rich and dynamic sound that resonates with listeners on multiple levels. This eclectic background equips me with the tools to tell powerful stories through music, allowing me to connect, inspire, and evoke emotion in everyone who listens.

Fancy: You’ve spent over four decades in the industry, breaking barriers and making space for yourself as a woman of color in the arts. What are some of your biggest challenges, and how have they shaped your artistry?

Anya: My four decades in the industry as a woman of color have undoubtedly been marked by significant challenges, which have not only tested my resilience but also profoundly shaped my artistry. Here are some key challenges that many women of  color in the arts face, along with how they might have influenced your creative expression:

One of the most significant challenges has been the lack of representation in the industry.  Historically, women of color have been underrepresented in mainstream music and arts, which can lead to feelings of isolation and invisibility. This challenge motivated me to be a trailblazer, using my platform to amplify diverse voices and stories. My experiences likely inspire you to create art that reflects the complexities of my identity, opening doors for others and fostering a sense of community among marginalized artists.

I’ve had to overcome stereotypes and biases, which can be an ongoing hurdle. Often, artists from marginalized backgrounds are pigeonholed into specific genres or roles, limiting their creative freedom. Balancing industry expectations, building networks and community, and personal authenticity were also challenges.

My experiences positioned me as an advocate for change within the industry.  Whether through mentorship, community outreach, or social activism, my voice can inspire and empower others facing similar challenges. This advocacy shapes my artistic narrative,  infusing my work with themes of justice, equality, and empowerment while driving important conversations within the arts community.
