Remembering John Singleton

Quite frankly, I felt a bit overwhelmed to write about such an endearing figure. Mr. John Singleton was and will forever be known for the trailblazer he was. He was unwavering in his passion, and this passion led to igniting the flame of other Hollywood “rookies” if you will, who have become Hollywood heavy-weights in their own right.

Mr. Singleton had a voracious passion for telling the different perspective of cultures, specifically black people, and he was adamant to tell it all. The good, the bad, the ugly, the truth- he created his own lane and fiercely developed and defended it.

He was not only undoubtedly and undeniably talented, but he also launched the incredible talents who were privileged to work with him. Such global superstars as Ice Cube, Morris Chestnut, Cuba Gooding Jr., Nia Long, Lawrence Fishbourne, and  Angela Bassett got a huge start and were spotlighted so fiercely, it gave them their “come up”. And that was John Singleton’s huge spotlight too.

His passion was not just about telling stories and truths. He was equally passionate about his cast and crew. He showed this again  by gathering up more talents and letting them shine, such global wonders as Janet Jackson got her acting start in “Poetic Justice”, as well as beloved superstar/cultural icon Tupac Shakur, and the incomparable Taraji P. Henson, veterans in Hollywood culture like Tyrese Gibson, A.J. Johnson, Snoop Dogg, and Omar Gooding. One can definitely see and appreciate John Singleton’s enviable and well-respected legacy.

John Singleton has passed physically, however, because of his incomparable talent, and generous spirit, his legacy will always leave us in good spirits with classic films. He set a bar that urges us to find our lanes and not only defend it from naysayers, but also take his baton and continue to run with a passion equal to his, to not let his longevity and legacy wilt, and to make sure the spotlight stays on his incredible body of work.
