For many Black women, hair healing is more than deep conditioners and protective styles—it’s about reclaiming identity, confidence, and care from the inside out. Salena Dowdy understands this deeply. As a Master Cosmetologist and Certified Trichologist, she has dedicated her career to helping women heal their hair at the root—literally and emotionally.
After watching clients struggle with thinning, breakage, and unexplained hair loss, Salena founded Beautiful Tresses—a holistic, education-first brand rooted in hair healing science and community care. Through plant-based products, personalized consultations, and the supportive Beautiful Tresses Society, she’s created a safe space where Black women can both understand their hair and nurture it back to health.
In this interview, Salena shares how her purpose as a founder and trichologist informs every move—from developing hair-healing solutions backed by science to empowering her clients through education and empathy. She also shares three essential tips for healthy hair care, specifically tailored for Black women who often face dryness, scalp issues, and styling damage.

More than just a brand, Beautiful Tresses is a hair healing journey—and Salena Dowdy is walking it with every woman she serves.
Fancy: You’ve built Beautiful Tresses on love, science, and service—how has your purpose as a founder guided the way you run your brand and show up for your community?
Salena: My purpose as a founder has been based on every decision I’ve made with Beautiful Tresses. The various approaches I take to love, science, and service demonstrate how I run my brand and engage with our community. Most importantly, we want to build a community where everyone feels seen, valued, and loved. Transparency is key, so we communicate the science behind our products, allowing customers to be informed about their hair care. While offering personalized consultations, informative content about hair health, and addressing their concerns. We want to be more than a brand but also a partner in their hair journey.
Fancy: How does your background as a certified trichologist shape your approach to creating effective, science-backed hair care solutions for women?
Salena: As a Certified Trichologist, my training provides a clearer understanding of hair structure, growth cycles, and the factors that can affect the health of the hair. I ensured the ingredients were safe and provided results for those seeking holistic solutions.
Fancy: Beautiful Tresses is more than a product line—it’s a movement. How do you empower women through the Beautiful Tresses Society, and why was building that community so important to you?
Salena: Beautiful Tresses is more than a product line; it’s a movement to encourage women to embrace their natural beauty and hair journey. Beautiful Tresses Society serves as a safe space where women can share their experiences and challenges, with it being a judgment-free space.
Building the Society was important to me because I believe hair is an identity and self-expression, and if women don’t feel beautiful, they have a space where they are not alone and can get some encouragement. We can uplift each other and redefine beauty in a way that is undeniable.
Fancy: With so many women dealing with hair thinning or breakage, what are three non-negotiable healthy hair tips you think every Black woman should know and practice?
Salena:
- Moisture Retention because black women’s hair tends to be drier and more prone to break. Try to do deep conditioning treatments regularly.
- Establish a regular scalp care routine by cleansing the scalp to remove buildup and excess oils. Always massage and stimulate in a circular motion.
- Be gentle when handling the hair. The way you handle your hair could impact its growth. Avoid tight styles, harsh chemicals, and harsh treatments.
By following these tips, you could help maintain the health of the hair and promote growth.
Fancy: As a purpose-driven entrepreneur, how do you stay grounded and aligned with your mission while juggling business growth, family life, and your clients’ hair journeys?
Salena: I regularly revisit my mission and the reason behind it. I focus on what matters the most and go after my goals. Setting boundaries around work hours allows me to be present with my family and clients. I lean on my family and mentors to help when challenges occur. This also helps me serve my community effectively.
Fancy: How would you describe your swagher? What makes Salena unique?
Salena: I am different because I live this hair thing out every day. I conduct research and work diligently studying hair and its functions.
Fancy: Do you have any upcoming events or projects you’d like to share?
Salena: I will be vending in the area around Essence festival 2025 I do have a new product coming out soon to help regrow hair loss.
